Mid-City Community Advocacy Network (Mid-City CAN) is a community collaborative comprised of hundreds of partners and thousands of residents in City Heights. Mid-City CAN’s mission is to create a safe, productive, and healthy community through collaboration, advocacy, and organizing. In its 35th year, Mid-City CAN plays an essential role in the community of City Heights by facilitating dialogue, identifying common issues, spearheading advocacy efforts, building power, and training residents to take leadership roles in affecting change. We believe that the healthiest communities are often the ones with community members who are most civically engaged. Recent campaign wins include $5.1 million towards two skate parks and the Halal school lunch program. 

Reporting to the Civic Engagement/Health Coordinator who oversees Mid-City CAN’s Civic Health work,?the Civic Health Worker Team Lead supervises and supports a team of 8-10 Civic Health Workers who canvass, phone-bank, and who are also neighborhood leaders, in achieving voter engagement campaign goals, building the resident base, and building power. They are also neighborhood leaders working toward achieving campaign goals, building the resident base, and building power in City Heights and neighboring communities. The team’s current campaign is Get Out the Vote efforts for the 2026 General Election. The Team Lead works on-the-ground as part of a team to execute engagement plans with a high level of quality. Team Leads work part-time and on a seasonal basis during engagement program periods. Hours are typically Sunday – Thursday 3:30pm to 8:30pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 2:00 pm but may be subject to change according to program needs. The current program is expected to start October 11th, 2026, and end November 3rd, 2026. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Coordination

• Coordinate and supervise team of 8-10 Civic Health Workers on health resources and voter engagement canvassing/phone-banking
• Help prepare materials for outreach team on a daily basis
• Prepare and dispatch team on daily basis and facilitate daily reflections at the end of each shift
• Execute campaign plans and adapt, if necessary, in real-time to meet needs in the field 
• Shadow and coach team members to support canvassers/phone-bankers in reaching goals
• Actively participate in voter and health outreach activities such as phone-banking, canvassing, house meetings, and tabling, alongside team members in a “hands-on” fashion 
• Initiate contact with people in public areas and/or at their homes to solicit general health resources, vote, engage, take surveys, and/or sign petitions, and access resources that address various community health issues 
• Demonstrate and utilize great customer service and listening skills to motivate voters to sign materials and engage with Mid-City CAN 
• Use creative techniques and means to engage new members 
• Validate that potential signers meets the general eligibility requirements to sign petition forms through the established means and methods when required 
• Submit all completed forms within the required timeframe 
• Work closely with the Organizing Director to ensure all goals and objectives are met 
• Maintain compliance with all project requirements 
• Track and enter daily reports on team and individual activities
• Attend staff meetings 
• Other tasks as assigned 

Supervision

• Supervise and delegate to assigned subordinate staff 
• Supervise assigned canvassing, phone-banking, and other activities relevant to campaign 
• Assign duties to staff by explaining how those duties are to be done, providing clear timelines, measurable goals, and communicating a vision for success 
• Communicate regularly and effectively to the Coordinator about needs, challenges and successes 
• Maximize productivity and efficiency of staff performance 
• Ensure work is complete at a high level and on time 
• Work with the Coordinator to ensure staff maintains focus and alignment in daily activities 
• Work with the Coordinator to manage staff performance by holding staff accountable to progress, addressing problems in real-time, and praising good performance/accomplishments?
• Provide staff with assistance and support in executing assignments and resolving dilemmas 
• Manage conflict by intervening and resolving concerns and complaints among staff or collaborative members as needed 
• Enforce personnel policies to ensure staff compliance with policies and procedures? 

Leadership

• Adapt strategically and proactively to changes in campaign environment, at times with little to no advance notice 
• Effectively communicate and align staff to Mid-City CAN’s mission, vision, and values 
• Demonstrate and ensure high standards of conduct and commitment in approach to work 
• Establish and maintain effective working relations and professional boundaries with coworkers, community members, and other agencies and a variety of internal and external stakeholders 
• Work in unison with management team to ensure consistency, maintain workplace standards, and high-quality performance among staff

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• High school diploma, GED, and 2 years college, or commensurate education required 
• Team leadership experience preferred 
• Experience canvassing or phone-banking and familiarity with voter engagement a plus 
• Bilingual (Spanish, Somali, Swahili, Arabic, Vietnamese, or Other language) 
• Possess a passion for social justice that translates to daily interactions 
• Ability to build consensus and effectively manage conflict 
• Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced flexible environment and meet deadlines 
• Ability to self-direct, take initiative, and work independently, while also being able to motivate a team under pressure 
• Flexible and ability to adapt to learning new ideas and concepts, responding to changes, and last-minute requests 
• Ability to work with and maintain positive relationships with diverse constituencies and sensitivity in dealing with diversity issues including race, gender, sexual orientation, economic status 
• Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to maintain etiquette in a professional environment, and exude a positive attitude 
• Ability to work flexible hours, weekends and evening work required 90% of time. 
• Access to reliable transportation and willing to use it for job-related tasks 
• Access to cell phone and email account for work purposes

Physical Requirements and Work Environment : Work is performed primarily outdoors in a community setting with occasional office work at a desk on computer and phone; employee regularly walks while operating electronic equipment 4 to 5 hours per day; occasionally lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Must be prepared to work in all kinds of outdoor weather. Position also involves use of a computer and keyboard, tablet, scanner, telephone, and face-to-face communications; employee should be able to communicate clearly and professionally in all of these manners. Position includes standing at event tables and walking neighborhood for several hours on as needed basis. The employee may spend periods of time sitting, standing, or walking. Compensation :?The hourly wage range for this part-time, non-exempt position is $28-$32.00 per hour, commensurate with work experience, skills and educational background.
