Basic Functions and Scope of Responsibility

The Director of Facilities is responsible for the planning, execution, and oversight of a safe, clean, and fully functional YMCA facility and grounds. This role ensures the implementation of effective janitorial, maintenance, and risk management plans, including preventive maintenance schedules, contractor oversight, and compliance with safety standards. The Director of Facilities leads a team dedicated to creating a welcoming and well-maintained environment that reflects the YMCA’s commitment to quality and safety.

Role Responsibilities

• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate janitorial and maintenance staff; foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability.
• Implement and monitor facility operations plans, including daily cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and risk management procedures.
• Develop and manage a comprehensive preventative maintenance schedule to minimize disruptions and extend facility longevity.
• Maintain building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical) and oversee timely repairs to equipment and facilities.
• Monitor departmental budgets and identify cost-effective maintenance solutions.
• Conduct daily walk-throughs to assess facility conditions and ensure high standards of cleanliness, safety, and presentation.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; act as primary liaison with fire, health, and building departments.
• Manage vendor relationships and oversee all contractors; solicit and evaluate bids when needed.
• Maintain accurate records related to warranties, inspections, and compliance documentation.
• Ensure landscaping and building exteriors reflect a clean and inviting appearance.
• Participate in required YMCA trainings and meetings.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the YMCA’s mission and operational success.

Education, Experience & Training 

• Bachelor’s degree in facility management, construction, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in facilities management or a closely related field
• Working knowledge of building systems: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general repair
• Strong leadership, project management, and budget oversight skills
• CPR, AED and First Aid certification obtained within 30 days of employment
• Boiler certification required within 120 days of hire (if applicable)
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record meeting YMCA standards
• Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations and work flexible hours as needed

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
• Must have high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative. 
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
• Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
