This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Deputy Director of Conservation Communications, North America Region based in the United States.
This is a senior communications leadership role supporting conservation programs across a broad and diverse North American region.
You will shape and execute communications strategies that advance both programmatic priorities and fundraising objectives.
The role spans conservation, Indigenous rights, equitable conservation, human rights, science, oceans, and land protection.
You will lead high-impact storytelling across media, social platforms, events, and written and visual communications.
Working with senior leaders, program teams, donors, partners, and external stakeholders, you will strengthen engagement and organizational influence.
You will also manage communications professionals, budgets, complex initiatives, and strategic partnerships while fostering creativity and professional growth.

Accountabilities
- Lead the development and implementation of integrated communications strategies supporting conservation, programmatic, engagement, and fundraising objectives across the North America region.
- Direct complex communications projects and initiatives across multiple programs, stakeholders, and channels, ensuring strategic alignment, effective execution, and measurable outcomes.
- Oversee communications activities spanning traditional media, social media, events, written content, visual storytelling, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
- Manage and develop a team of communications professionals, providing direction, coaching, performance support, professional development, and opportunities for growth.
- Build strong relationships across communications, marketing, conservation programs, operating units, senior leadership, donors, board members, partners, media, and other external stakeholders.
- Cultivate relationships with influential media contacts and identify opportunities to strengthen visibility and public engagement around conservation priorities.
- Support senior executives and organizational leaders with strategic communications, staff engagement, presentations, media interactions, and reputation-building initiatives.
- Provide coaching and training on media interviews, presentations, writing, stakeholder engagement, and other communications practices.
- Coordinate with teams working across conservation, policy, and climate-related initiatives to identify synergies and maximize organizational influence and efficiency.
- Develop, manage, and evaluate project, program, and team budgets, providing input into broader departmental budget planning.
- Establish goals, measure the effectiveness of communications programs, evaluate results, and develop corrective or improved strategies when needed.
- Lead complex projects with broad organizational visibility and make independent decisions within established strategic objectives.
- Facilitate collaboration and communication across decentralized teams and functions, helping align diverse perspectives around shared priorities.
- Promote an inclusive, creative, and collaborative environment that encourages professional growth and strong team performance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or a related field, with at least 9 years of relevant professional experience , or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing professional staff and multidisciplinary teams, including setting objectives, motivating employees, managing performance, coaching, and supporting conflict resolution.
- Proven experience developing and executing communications, media, engagement, or public affairs strategies and measuring their effectiveness.
- Strong track record of leading complex projects or programs involving strategic planning, financial management, stakeholder coordination, and measurable outcomes.
- Experience cultivating and managing relationships with clients, partners, senior leaders, donors, media, community stakeholders, or other external audiences.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, mediation, and negotiation skills, with the ability to communicate persuasively with diverse audiences.
- Ability to translate complex conservation, organizational, or strategic issues into compelling messages and stories for public, professional, executive, and donor audiences.
- Strong understanding of communications technologies, industry best practices, and modern media and engagement approaches.
- Experience working within decentralized or geographically distributed organizations and coordinating communications across multiple operating units.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and monitor budgets effectively.
- Strong leadership, organizational, strategic thinking, and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to work independently within broad objectives.
- Ability to foster creativity, collaboration, inclusion, and professional development within a team.
- Strong interest in or experience with human rights, Indigenous rights, Tribal nations, or partnerships with Indigenous leaders is highly desirable.
- Multicultural or cross-cultural experience is preferred, along with multilingual capabilities where applicable.
- A master’s degree or extensive additional professional experience is preferred.
- Familiarity with conservation, environmental, nonprofit, public policy, or mission-driven organizations is advantageous.
- Ability to build trust and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, disciplines, and perspectives.
