Grounds and Maintenance Technician at Taliesin West

Position Summary The Grounds and Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds, landscapes and mechanical systems around the site at Taliesin West, a National Historic Landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site. This role requires attention to detail, adaptability, creative problem solving and a strong work ethic to support both the preservation of historic grounds and day‑to‑day operational needs. Essential Functions Prepares the grounds, landscapes and walkways for daily tours, events and public programs. Assists with the routine maintenance of grounds, landscapes, facilities, and systems as directed by a supervisor. Maintains and monitors site irrigation systems, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing lines, valves, timers and emitters to ensure efficient water distribution. Adjusts watering schedules and manually waters plants as needed to support the health of native and cultivated vegetation. Performs turf maintenance (weed eating, edging, spraying, mowing, and blowing of grass) to maintain a clean appearance for visitor‑facing grounds. Maintains and repairs outdoor lighting systems, inspecting fixtures, replacing bulbs, and adjusting timers. Maintains and troubleshoots HVAC systems, replacing air filters, cleaning outdoor unit coils and clearing condensation lines. Responds to maintenance requests from foundation staff and guests. Works independently and collaboratively on assignments that may be complex, demonstrating strong problem‑solving skills and initiative. Documents tasks with images or schematics under the direction of the Preservation Manager. Works in all weather conditions, predominantly outdoors. Other duties as assigned. Salary Description $20.50 per hour Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED, preferably with apprentice or journeyman experience or related professional experience. Ability and interest in learning and performing skilled trades such as commercial grounds landscaping, landscape lighting, landscape irrigation, mechanical systems, electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, tile, drywall, etc. Desire to learn and grow under experienced leaders, supervisors and coworkers. Good customer service ability with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to use hand tools and measuring instruments. Ability to read, write, and interpret safety regulations, operating and maintenance guides, and procedure manuals. Ability to understand and follow Foundation and departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work effectively with shifting priorities when unexpected events arise. Availability to work up to 40 hours a week as scheduled and occasional weekends as required by supervisor. Valid AZ driver’s license. Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, handling objects, reaching, climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, occasionally lifting or moving up to 75 pounds, and vision requirements such as close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and focus. Work environment includes exposure to weather conditions and natural desert vegetation with occasional wildlife. Noise level is usually moderate.
