Description The individual who fulfills this role will be collaborating with providers and staff to obtain prior authorizations, processing both urgent and routine referrals, and contributing to similar types of administrative tasks that support patient care and clinical teams. This function also includes active coordination and administrative support to conduct provider peer-to-peer evaluations with third-party payers and communicating with 3rd party payers and external stakeholders. This role provides ad hoc administrative support to the clinical leadership teams. The secondary focus of this position is to provide clinical care and act within one's professional scope and active licensure. Administrative and clinical focus may shift by departmental leadership at any time. Candidates must meet all standard qualifications of this role as outlined below, in addition to possessing excellent communication skills, organization, and the ability to work autonomously. You may rotate through our four locations in this role: UNC Orthopaedics Sports Medicine Center, UNC Orthopaedics Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) on the UNC Chapel Hill campus, UNC Orthopaedics‑Weaver Crossing near the Chapel Hill/Durham border, and UNC Orthopaedics at Panther Creek in Cary. Final schedule expectations will be discussed with the Hiring Manager. Schedule expectations include standard Monday‑Friday business hours. Summary The Medical Assistant II, Certified provides routine clinical and administrative support to providers and other health care team members in an outpatient clinic setting. Work is performed under the clinical supervision of the provider for patient care activities, and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor. Responsibilities Performs rooming and/or intake process, collecting data including vital signs, height, weight, and information related to the patient's reason for visit. Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history. Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies, and preferred pharmacy. Assists the provider as directed during treatments, examinations, and procedures. Collects specimens and performs phlebotomy. Administrates medications under the direction of a provider. Performs tests, for example EKG, eye exams, under the direction of a provider. Reviews the patient record to determine whether the patient requires any routine health screenings. Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms, and educational materials ready for use during the visit/procedure. Provides patient with after‑visit, follow‑up, self‑care or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed. Prepares, cleans, stocks, and maintains exam and treatment rooms. Cleans and sterilizes instruments. Assists with patient registration, check‑in/check‑out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests, treatments, and referrals. Answers clinic telephone and assists in‑basket under the direction of a provider or nurse. Assists in emergency situations as directed by a provider or nurse. Additional essential responsibilities of a Certified Medical Assistant II may include: Precepts new medical assistant/credentialed medical assistant hires and externs. Trains other medical assistants in clinic procedures. Assists the physician with maintaining preventive health measures for a panel of patients. Performs clinic‑based quality or safety roles (e.g., clinic safety coordinator, maintains immunization or medication registry, performs medication audits). Manages clinic supply ordering. Education Requirements No education required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of a Medical Assisting program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accreditation Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) is strongly preferred but not required. Licensure/Certification Requirements Requires Medical Assistant certification by AAMA, AMT, CCMA, NRCMA, or NCMA. Basic Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required. Professional Experience Requirements Possess at least one year of full‑time experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified. Demonstrate possession of the competencies outlined in the Medical Assistant, Certified Advancement Worksheet. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements Ability to perform the essential functions of the position as outlined above. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to engage positively with patients and families and work as a team with staff and providers. Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record. Location Location: US: NC: Chapel Hill (UNC Orthopaedics Sports Medicine Center, UNC Orthopaedics Ambulatory Care Center (ACC), UNC Orthopaedics‑Weaver Crossing, and UNC Orthopaedics at Panther Creek in Cary). Salary Range $18.84 – $26.77 per hour (Hiring Range). Pay offers are determined by experience and internal equity.
