Fraud Specialist

Location: Raleigh, North Carolina (Partial Remote: Would prefer contractor to train onsite once to twice a week during initial weeks)

Role Overview

This role is focused on mitigating loan losses by identifying, investigating, and preventing fraudulent loan activity. The position involves reviewing pay stubs, income verification documents, and other supporting loan documentation for potential inconsistencies or fraud indicators. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, able to work independently, and possess strong organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Review income documentation and supporting loan application materials for accuracy and authenticity.
• Identify mathematical errors, inconsistencies, missing information, and potential fraud red flags.
• Document findings and communicate concerns to loan officers and senior fraud specialists.
• Escalate suspicious documentation for additional investigation when appropriate.
• Utilize Excel and internal systems to track, review, and document case activity.
• Analyze activity and documentation to detect and prevent fraudulent activity.
• Monitor reports for emerging fraud trends and test the effectiveness of controls.

Required Qualifications

Experience: Must have a basic understanding of consumer and real estate lending. Must have working knowledge of lending origination and servicing systems.

Technical Skills: Experience working with Excel, Word, Access, and/or other computer databases. Must be proficient using available resources to locate and acquire information regarding lending regulations.

Qualities: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail. Ability to clearly articulate findings to loan officers and fraud team members. Must be able to comprehend and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior lending experience, including areas of origination and underwriting.
• Previous experience in consumer banking, loan processing, or fraud investigations.
• Experience reviewing financial or income-related documentation.

Work Environment

This position offers a hybrid in-office and work-from-home schedule. The in-office setting involves physical proximity to other employees. The work-from-home arrangement requires a quiet, private working environment free from noise and disruption.
