Scientist - Virology - Wan Lab

Overview The Wan Influenza Systems Biology Lab, part of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Veterinary Pathobiology, and the NextGen Center for Influenza and Emerging Infectious Diseases (CIEID) at the University of Missouri, seeks a Scientist in Virology or Aerosol Biology. The lab focuses on clinical, experimental, computational, and translational approaches to study influenza transmission, vaccine effectiveness, and pathogen discovery. The lab has access to BSL3/ABSL-3 animal facilities and extensive core resources in imaging, proteomics, metabolomics, immunobiology, genomics, and computational modeling. Responsibilities Investigate molecular, cellular, and biophysical determinants of influenza transmission, including host range, tissue tropism, aerosolization, and airborne spread; develop human studies and animal models to characterize and predict transmission in humans across environments. Investigate molecular mechanisms affecting vaccine performance and immune imprinting; develop broadly protective vaccines to enhance immunity and reduce transmission. Identify emerging viral threats at the animal–human interface through pathogen discovery, genomic surveillance, and epidemiological studies. Lead research efforts, mentor postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and junior lab members, and publish in peer‑reviewed journals. Contribute to project reports and grant preparation; engage in grant writing and independent project development. Shift Monday‑Friday, 8 am–5 pm; flexibility for weekend or evening hours may be required to meet experimental needs. Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least 3 years of experience (or comparable knowledge and skills). Preferred Qualifications PhD in Virology, Aerosol Biology, Infectious Diseases, or related field, with at least three years of postdoctoral (or equivalent) research experience. Salary Range $65,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year.
