Job Description Job Description Labor One is hiring Journey-Level Structural Welders for a project in San Diego, California . Shipyard experience is required. Cell 815 Sheila Lane Channelview, TX 77530 Office Hours: 8:00 AM-5:00 PM General Information Job Description: This position is responsible for accomplishing, with minimal supervision, production welding on a ship or in a shop to support structural repairs and modernization of marine vessels including US Naval Vessels, Military Sealift Command, and commercial ships. The qualifications and general capabilities listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability desired by the shipyard.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Must be able to comprehend instructions, drawings, and general correspondence. Must have a working knowledge of ship repair terminology and ship compartment naming convention. Must be physically and medically capable to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the job as prescribed under OSHA standards. PPE includes hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) Must be able to effectively confer job related information to the supervisor. Must understand SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW. Must be able to certify in all positions: SMAW Full Penetration weld with permanent backing (ceramic and metal) FCAW Full Penetration weld with permanent backing (ceramic and metal) GMAW Full Penetration weld with permanent backing (ceramic and metal) Must be able to interpret drawings, specifications, and Navy/MSC/ABS standards manuals. Must possess a working knowledge of welding equipment and work processes used in marine welding. Must be able to operate and care for welding equipment, portable power tools, and hand tools used to accomplish assigned work. Be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Must understand the US customary and metric measurement system. Must have up to four (4) years of welding experience in a related field.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Communicate with and provide direction to the welding helper and fire watch as needed to complete the assigned tasks. Communicate explicitly with the Fire Watch and do not commence hot work until the area is ready in accordance with fire prevention protocol. . Arrive at the designated work site at the assigned time and end the shift as directed by the schedule and your supervisor. Work shifts and overtime as assigned. Be accountable for completion of daily work assignments. 6. Comply with OSHA standards and shipyards best safety practices. Keep your work area clean and safe at all times, especially at the end of the shift. Provide quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required by the work specifications or assigned by the supervisor. Carry out written or oral instructions. Confer with the supervisor to resolve unexpected events related to your assigned task. Work Tasks Include a. Prepare work area for hot work, including checking hot work certifications at the work site and adjacent areas. b. Prepare surfaces for production welding by inspecting joints and cleaning as required. c. Inspect welds for defects. Confer with supervision before correcting deficiencies. d. Document existing conditions. e. Become familiar with applicable safety requirements before commencing work. f. Ensure Lock-out Tag-out has been correctly accomplished.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The working environment in the shipyard varies from a normal office conditions to working outside where precipitation, wind, extreme cold, and extreme heat and high humidity are not unusual. When working inside of vessels the environment may be smoky, hot or cold, and have low levels of illumination may be present. There are heavy equipment and power tools operating almost at every location. Depending on the type of work available, reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the job requirements. Personnel can expect to work in a variety of spaces from confined areas accessible only by manholes to high platforms accessible only by scaffolding or ladders. Work may also be accomplished using mechanical lifts as working platforms. The noise level in the shipyard environment is usually loud, especially inside of vessels. The noise encountered in the shop is generally low to moderate. The wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment is mandatory. There is always the potential of falling objects and personnel are occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts during work. Appropriate PPE must always be worn.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Must be able to tour all vessels, piers, docks and work sites. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. SPECIFIC PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: May be required to demonstrate any or all requirements. Lift/push/pull 75 lbs lbs on an occasional basis (0-33% of the day). Lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs on a frequent basis (34-66% of the day). Perform prolonged standing (2-3 hours). Bend, squat crouch, crawl and kneel. Climb in a safe manner (climbing, includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders and ramps). Work at a variety of levels and positions (ex. Waist, eye, above head). Good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. Sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. Access work areas through 18" x 36" openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time (33-66% of the day). Respond to visual, verbal, and audible sounds/commands. Work at heights above 12' from ladders, scaffolding, and manlifts. Fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. Perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers. Turn head from side to side and about on the vertical axis.
