NICU RN 36hr Day position

Overview The Messina Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at South Shore Hospital is the first and only Level III NICU located in a community hospital in Massachusetts. The Level III Messina Family NICU and the Level II Andrade Family Special Care Nursery care for babies with a wide range of medical conditions. The unit is staffed by doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists with specialized training in ill, premature, and recovering newborns. Our NICU doctors are dually affiliated with South Shore Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. Responsibilities Medication Administration; demonstrates knowledge of and follows SSH policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications. Completes medication reconciliation as per SSH policy and procedure. Document narcotic withdrawal, administration, verify counts, wastes per policy, and resolve narcotic discrepancies. Develop, evaluate, and update individualized plan of care; communicate a prioritized problem list/plan of care for each patient. Initiate admission assessment within 8 hours of admission; identify and document patient/family teaching needs. Continuously assess and reassess patient care needs within established nursing practice. Document all patient care following nursing department policies, unit standards, disease processes, and nurse-sensitive indicators (e.g., falls, skin, CAUTI). Assess pain level and document patient response to interventions (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) per policy. Advocate for patients and families; seek help to represent their interests when needed. Raise ethical questions and consult the clinical team; utilize available resources for ethical decisions. Communicate daily plan of care via whiteboard and update each shift. Facilitate discharge/transfer with a target of 12:00 pm; communicate barriers via chain of command. Safety/Quality: foster a culture of safety and maintain a safe environment. Verify patient identification with two identifiers prior to invasive procedures; conduct time-out; document correct patient, procedure, site, equipment, and consent. Comply with CDC hand hygiene guidelines; follow universal precautions; use PPE appropriately; dispose of hazardous materials; access MSDS as needed. Ensure environment meets regulatory requirements at all times. Understand and demonstrate roles in hospital codes and emergency preparedness. Professional development: take ownership of ongoing development, incorporate evidence-based practice, and pursue performance improvement initiatives. Obtain at least 5 contact hours per year in the area of practice. Practice within MA Nurse Practice Act; direct other licenses and non-licensed personnel as assigned. Accept and respond to feedback and recommendations for change; maintain professional relationships across disciplines. Demonstrate critical thinking: analyze problems, evaluate solutions, and communicate effectively via chain of command. Stay informed about changes in hospital policy and procedure; use technology to support work processes. Access Lotus Notes for email, learning management, and other RN resources; use department/unit software applications; understand downtime procedures. Operate within legal, regulatory, and ethical standards; comply with applicable policies and procedures. Safeguard patient privacy and security; participate in SSH privacy and security programs and escalate potential issues to management. Collaborate with patients and families as active members of the care team; respect preferences and involve them in planning, implementing, and evaluating care. Recognize the patient and family as important members of the health care team and welcome their participation according to patient preferences. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adapt care to diverse populations; utilize interpreter services and online resources as needed.
