Communications System Engineer

Job Overview The Intermediate Communications System Engineer guides junior members, provides technical support to senior engineers, and manages third‑party engineering contractors to ensure successful project delivery and completion. Location Lone Tree, CO Chicago, IL McLean, VA Responsibilities Support senior engineers for all facets of communications system engineering effort. Help develop the scope of work for communications system engineering tasks. Develop and maintain the company’s Standard Operating Procedure and Design Manual (SYSOP‑DM) documents for the manager. Maintain the Communication Lab: build training procedures, testing procedures to meet lab training and testing requirements. Create and maintain training materials for junior engineers and new teams. Assist senior engineer/manager with schedules and budgets for assigned project elements; monitor progress and document changes in scope. Determine scope of work for procurement of materials and equipment, manage procurement schedules and budgets, and interface with procurement and subcontract personnel. Coordinate work among other discipline leads to achieve successful project deliverables. Prepare and review technical reports and documentation for clients and project management. Produce detailed design plans for all communications and network systems to support related equipment. Perform studies to support deployment of various communications systems. Manage third‑party subcontractors for detailed design communications activities. Select technology, devices, equipment, and/or components to meet performance requirements. Assess potential outside design consultants. Provide guidance for Junior Engineers/Designers and subcontracting arrangements and evaluate estimated design costs. Experience working with AI agents and tools preferred. Other supporting tasks deemed necessary by senior leadership. Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering, communications engineering, electronics engineering, information systems engineering or equivalent experience. Master’s degree in engineering preferred. Ability to travel 10–15 % of the time. Minimum 2 to 4 years of progressive work experience with a thorough understanding of communications system design, construction, and related standards. Knowledge of regulations, standards, and contract management for communications systems. Experience in systems integration management and intermediate understanding of train control, SCADA, traction power, tunnel ventilation, and auxiliary electrical systems. Intermediate understanding of on‑board/wayside interfaces and communications aspects of train control technologies such as ATC, PTC, and CBTC. Other Requirements Regular, reliable attendance. Work during normal operating hours; overtime and weekends may be required. Be willing to work at various locations and conditions. Compensation Base Compensation: $102,000 / yr – $110,000 / yr (actual compensation may vary based on education, experience, skillset, and location).
