Apex Power Co. Project Electrical Technician

The APEX Power Co. Project in Hubbard, TX, currently under Phase 1 construction, is expected to expand to 1.6 GW. It features a diverse mix of generation technologies, including Siemens SGT-800/400 simple cycle turbines, MAN/Everllence 18V51/60G gas reciprocating engines, GE LM6000/LM2500 simple cycle turbines, Pratt & Whitney FT8 simple cycle turbines, and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling flexible, reliable power output. Future expansion may include additional GE aero and large frame units (6B, 7FA/7FB/7H) in simple or combined cycle configurations, allowing the plant to efficiently meet varying energy demands while supporting data center grid reliability.

Opportunity Summary

The Electrical Technician at the APEX Power Co. Project supports safe, reliable plant operations by inspecting, testing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment. Working across power generation, distribution, auxiliary, and BESS electrical systems, this role performs preventive and corrective maintenance, supports commissioning and startup activities, and works with Operations, Engineering, contractors, and OEMs to improve equipment reliability and minimize downtime.

As Electrical Technician, your responsibilities specific to the Pre-Commissioning Phase include the following functions:

  • Participate in plant and system orientation, including electrical distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, motors, motor control centers, generators, auxiliary systems, and BESS, while learning operational sequences and applicable safety and environmental procedures.
  • Inspect and test electrical equipment and systems, including switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, motors, and protective devices, verifying functionality and readiness for cold and hot functional testing.
  • Assist commissioning engineers and technical teams with electrical testing, energization, system startups, and troubleshooting of generation, distribution, auxiliary equipment, and BESS.
  • Record test results, observations, and equipment deficiencies; coordinate with contractors, vendors, OEMs, and internal teams; and follow established electrical safety and safe work practices.

Your scope of responsibility as Electrical Technician includes the following primary functions:

  • Inspect, test, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install plant electrical equipment and systems, including switchgear, motors, transformers, generators, and associated auxiliary and BESS equipment.
  • Conduct corrective, preventive, predictive, and emergency maintenance on electrical systems, including 345 kV, 34.5 kV, 13.8 kV, and 4160-volt switchgear, motors, motor control centers, transformers, batteries, inverters, and generator excitation equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical system and equipment faults, evaluate equipment condition, and support improvements to system performance and reliability.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems associated with turbines, reciprocating engines, generators, auxiliary equipment, and BESS to support safe and reliable operation.
  • Complete electrical equipment installations and approved system modifications in accordance with safety requirements, technical standards, and established procedures.
  • Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, contractors, vendors, and OEMs during maintenance, projects, outages, commissioning, troubleshooting, and system upgrades.
  • Ensure shop equipment, tools, meters, and electrical test equipment are maintained in proper working condition.
  • Document equipment issues, repairs, downtime, test results, maintenance activities, drawing revisions, and other technical information accurately and consistently.
  • Apply safe electrical work practices, identify hazards, initiate or recommend corrective actions, and handle hazardous or regulated materials in accordance with safety and environmental requirements.
  • Monitor electrical equipment and system performance, analyze operating trends, and recommend improvements to enhance reliability, efficiency, and overall performance.
  • Support electrical troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, continuous improvement, and other plant operations and maintenance activities as required.

Complete additional specialist projects and tasks as needed, supporting plant operations, maintenance, and engineering initiatives.

Working Relationships

The Electrical Technician reports to either the Shift Supervisor or Maintenance Supervisor and receives general direction from plant management. The position works closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, contractors, vendors, and OEM personnel.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The Electrical Technician may work either a day-shift schedule or a DuPont rotating 12-hour schedule with day and night rotations, based on business and operational needs. Extended hours and flexible shifts may be required, including weekends and holidays, based on workload, commissioning activities, outages, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts and on-call assignments will also be required.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $34.91 to $61.50 per hour, along with eligibility for an annual performance bonus. The pay range reflects the range of experience levels being considered for this position.

Core Qualifications and Skills

  • An Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Plant Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent electrical training or relevant industry or military experience may also be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical systems in power generation or industrial environments, including electrical distribution, plant operations, safe work practices, and equipment functionality.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and maintaining industrial electrical equipment, including switchgear, motors, motor control centers, transformers, batteries, inverters, and generator excitation equipment.
  • Familiarity with electrical systems associated with power generation or industrial facilities; experience with combustion turbines, reciprocating engines, generators, auxiliary systems, and BESS is preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment drawings and using electrical test equipment to diagnose system and equipment issues.
  • Working knowledge of medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems, including switchgear, circuit breakers, electrical protection, grounding, and associated equipment.
  • Demonstrated skill in performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment and systems.
  • Effective collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, contractors, vendors, and OEM representatives, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly.
  • Strong documentation and analytical skills, including maintaining accurate electrical and maintenance records and evaluating equipment condition and operating trends.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver's license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
