SHRM Western North Carolina is seeking an energetic, organized, and creative Chapter Manager Intern to support the Board of Directors in executing the chapter s strategic priorities. This is a unique, hands-on opportunity for a student pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, Nonprofit Management, or a related field to gain substantive professional experience in chapter operations, communications, event management, and member engagement. The paid intern will work directly with the Chapter President and collaborate with the full Board of Directors, gaining exposure to governance, strategic planning, volunteer leadership, and professional association management. Rising juniors or seniors enrolled in a two- or four-year college or university are eligible for this internship. Reports To: Chapter President

Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours: Approximately 16-32 hours per month, or up to 160 hours per semester
Duration : Academic semester or year; renewable based on performance
Location: Hybrid Remote with occasional in-person events in Western NC
Compensation: Paid internship; rate commensurate with experience

Key Responsibilities 1. Membership Communications & Growth
Currently enrolled as a rising junior or senior at an accredited two- or four-year college or university
Pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Marketing, or a closely related field
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a self-directed, remote work environment
Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
Positive, professional attitude and a genuine interest in the HR profession Preferred
Experience with social media management and content creation
Familiarity with email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Constant Contact)
Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design tools
Previous involvement in student organizations, professional associations, or volunteer leadership
Knowledge of SHRM, HR certifications (SHRM-CP, PHR), or the HR profession
Experience with event planning or project coordination Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this internship, the Chapter Manager Intern will have developed the
following competencies:
Applied knowledge of nonprofit and professional association operations
Practical experience in communications strategy, content creation, and digital marketing
Event planning and project management skills
Understanding of strategic planning processes and governance in a volunteer-led organization
Professional network within the HR community in Western North Carolina and beyond
Portfolio-ready work products including communications campaigns, event materials, and reports Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is a hybrid position. The intern will work primarily remotely and must have access to a reliable internet connection and a personal computer or laptop. The intern must have reliable transportation and valid US Driver s License for monthly travel requirements to achieve occasional in-person attendance at chapter events and Board meetings in the Western North Carolina region as required. Some evening or weekend availability may be needed to support events. Light lifting (up to 25 lbs.) may be required at events. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Key Responsibilities 1. Membership Communications & Growth
- Develop, schedule, and execute email marketing campaigns to current and prospective members
- Manage and grow the chapter s social media presence across platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
- Create compelling content that promotes chapter events, member spotlights, HR resources, and SHRM-WNC news
- Monitor engagement metrics and provide regular reporting to the Board on communication effectiveness
- Support member recruitment and retention efforts, including outreach to lapsed members and prospective new members
- Assist in the development and execution of a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with chapter goals
- Support the planning, coordination, and execution of chapter programs, workshops, and professional development events
- Assist with event logistics including venue coordination, registration management, vendor communication, and day-of support
- Coordinate speaker outreach, confirmations, and preparation materials
- Help develop event promotional materials and manage RSVPs and attendee communications
- Compile and summarize post-event evaluations to inform future programming
- Support initiatives to grow chapter membership and improve member engagement and satisfaction
- Research and recommend best practices from other SHRM chapters and professional associations
- Help design and execute member appreciation, onboarding, and welcome communications
- Coordinate member surveys and compile feedback for Board review
- Assist in planning and supporting member socials and cultivated networking events
- Assist the Board in tracking progress toward strategic plan goals and objectives
- Prepare meeting agendas, supporting materials, and minutes for Board meetings and committee calls
- Maintain a chapter calendar of key milestones, deadlines, and events
- Conduct research and provide data-driven insights to support Board decision-making
- Help draft and update chapter policies, procedures, and operational documents
- Support sponsor relationship management, including preparation of sponsor packages and communications
- Assist in identifying and cultivating prospective sponsors aligned with chapter interests
- Coordinate sponsor recognition at events and across chapter communications channels
- Help track sponsor deliverables, benefits fulfillment, and renewal timelines
- Provide administrative support for revenue-generating activities and grant opportunities
