Conflicts Counsel

About the Role Conflicts Counsel will be a member of the Conflicts Department, collaborating with colleagues in the Conflicts, Client Engagement, and Risk Management departments to identify and resolve conflicts of interest issues related to the intake and maintenance of new and existing business, lateral clearance, outside counsel guidelines (OCGs), requests for proposals (RFPs), and other conflicts‑related matters. The position may be filled remotely or at any of Husch Blackwell’s locations. Responsibilities Collaborate with attorneys, analysts, business intake, support staff, and firm leadership to identify and resolve potential conflicts of interest, maintaining objectivity and professional independence. Review requests submitted to the Conflicts Department, providing concise and complete evaluations of potential conflict issues and executing steps for resolution. Draft and review confidentiality waivers and engagement letters to ensure adequate address of conflict issues and proper execution by authorized individuals. Review existing conflict waivers from clients for applicability to new conflict‑of‑interest scenarios. Make requests and recommendations regarding the implementation of ethical walls. Develop and maintain knowledge of legal ethics, case law, and professional responsibility rules related to conflicts, and advise on relevant policies and practices. Review client outside counsel guidelines and engagement agreements to identify deviations from firm policies, working with billing and relationship partners to address them. Assist with the review and clearance of new hire candidates, drafting engagement agreements and waivers as needed, and provide training to new lateral partner hires. Review outside counsel guidelines and prepare responses to clients that align with firm needs. Assist in the maintenance and documentation of clients’ agreements within Conflicts software and databases. Assist the Client Development team and partners in reviewing and responding to RFPs and similar business opportunities. Prepare and deliver trainings for the Conflicts team and firm attorneys and staff on topics related to conflicts, ethics, and professional responsibility. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Juris Doctor and active law license in the U.S. in the jurisdiction where the candidate resides. Three or more years of direct, full‑time conflicts experience at a large law firm. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience with on‑line reference materials and Boolean searching techniques (preferred). Experience with Intapp Open and Intapp Terms (strongly preferred). Strong analytical and written communication skills, with the ability to summarize and simplify complex conflict issues. Ability to independently prioritize multiple responsibilities, emails, and conflict requests. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Availability to travel to other firm locations as needed. Compensation and Benefits Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience.
