Deputy Sheriff

Description A non‑refundable signing bonus of $2,500 will be paid in the first paycheck following execution of the Employment Signing and Retention Bonus Agreement. A retention bonus of $2,500 will be paid in the next paycheck following completion of 6 full months of employment in the same position with the County. Starting salary is $44,500. Essential Functions / Typical Tasks Patrolling assigned area; responding to calls for service; investigating crimes; undertaking special assignments; assisting citizens; maintaining records; preparing reports. On an assigned shift, operate a patrol car to observe for violations of laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order. Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints. Serve warrants, summons, subpoenas, court orders; make arrests; testify in court. Serve court orders and civil process papers; perform required follow‑up tasks. Undertake special assignments such as school resource officer, DARE officer, bailiff, K‑9 officer, training officer, process server, community police, etc. Perform routine duties in connection with the operation of the county detention center. Control traffic and crowds at fires, EMS responses and crime scenes. Assist other law enforcement officers in investigations. Transport prisoners and mental patients to facilities throughout the state. Assist with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, recording and issuing evidence in court cases. Prepare a variety of detailed reports or activities; keep necessary files. May be assigned to a variety of administrative tasks such as purchasing, time keeping and related duties. Perform related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the county and location of important buildings and landmarks; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff’s Department; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and prepare clear and concise reports; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates; ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action; skill in the use of firearms and operation of a motor vehicle; possession of physical agility and endurance. Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Physical Requirements Requires exertion of up‑to‑100 pounds occasionally; ability to lift, push, pull, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, reach and perform repetitive motions. Requires vocal communication, hearing, and vision as described above. Can be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and must be able to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Special Requirements Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Certificate issued by the State of North Carolina. Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications for the position established by the department and the State of North Carolina.
