Safety Engineer

The Safety Engineer works to eliminate or control hazardous conditions created by human error or equipment/machine operation that may result in injury to personnel or damage to equipment or property. Develops and implements loss prevention, safety and health, and emergency preparedness programs. Works to ensure plant-wide compliance with OSHA and IVXP Safety regulations. Advises management on interpretation and application of rules and regulations related to Safety, Emergency Response, Fire Systems and Process Safety Management. Must have the ability to apply the proper principles, standards, practices, or techniques to ensure the site is safe and in compliance with government regulations and IVXP policies.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Performs duties related to safety programs
• Participates in hazard reviews
• Serves as technical resource for HAZOP team
• Conducts and signs-off Pre-startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) and Management of Change (MOC) bulletins
• Leads, or assists with, incident investigations
• Coordinates HSSE audits; coordinates completion of response and action plans
• Participates in Turn Around and Shut Downs meetings
• Originates, reviews and updates safety regulations
• Serves as unit HSSE resource; responds to requests for day-to-day and TAR technical assistance
• Participates in Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and Group Risk Assessments (GRA)
• Participates in contractor safety meetings
• Manages HSSE programs
• Oversees unit safety programs; assures compliance with OSHA regulations
• Implements local and corporate safety policies
• Recommends changes in policies and procedures
• Participates in unit safety meetings
• Participates in and leads safety audits
• Coordinates external audits; provides information to auditors
• Reviews safety statistics; analyzes data and identifies trends makes recommendations for corrective action
• Coordinates housekeeping audits
• Reviews and approves work permit templates for Confined Space Entry (CSE), Lock-Out Tag-Out (LOTO) Hot Work (HW) and other safety related permits
• Prepares, and/or oversees the preparation of monthly and annual safety reports
• Performs duties related to safety training and interaction
• Develops and delivers employee training
• Interacts with vendors, suppliers and contractors
• Interacts with regulatory agencies
• Participates in professional organizations
• Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned
• Maintains a clean and well-organized work area
• Attends meetings as required
• Attends training as required
• Complies with all HSSE programs, policies and procedures
• Participates on the Incident Management Team
• Participates on various HSSE committees
• Performs special projects and miscellaneous duties as assigned

Education, Experience, Certifications Required:

• Four-year degree in Safety Engineering, Safety Management, or Industrial Hygiene
• 5 years' experience in manufacturing with responsibilities expected for experience
• Knowledge of manufacturing operations
• Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal safety programs and regulations
• Excellent oral and written communications and presentation skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of local, state and federal safety regulations
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel and Power Point
• Ability to recognize and evaluate hazards

Education, Experience, Certifications Preferred:

• 2 years' experience in chemical manufacturing
• Professional certification CSP or CIH
