Primary Care Pain Specialist/Provider

Job Description

Serves as a Primary Care Pain Specialist/Provider for Veterans requiring comprehensive pain management within the clinic structure of the department.

Provides continuous patient management, including clinical evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, coordination of consultations, referrals, and participation in quality assurance and utilization oversight programs such as peer review.

Coordinates comprehensive pain management in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs guidelines and established medical practice standards.

Clinical performance is evaluated through quality reviews, completion of CPRS clinical reminders, committee participation, and other performance-based measures.

Maintains active knowledge of VA patient care processes, including workflows across the healthcare system and its clinics.

Maintains proficiency in the medical record system, including progress notes, documentation, orders, and timely completion of all records.

Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with VHA rules, regulations, and VA-specific clinical guidelines.

Responds to patients' urgent needs, completing phone calls, administrative forms, and patient requests promptly-typically within one week.

May supervise Physician Assistants, students, and residents, including conducting annual performance reviews and providing oversight of clinical activities such as documentation, prescribing, and consultation practices. New patients and patients with significant changes in status are reviewed collaboratively to ensure safe and effective care.

Meets all employment and credentialing requirements as determined by the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, including mandatory training, continuing education, and maintenance of a valid medical license in the United States. Continuously engages in professional development and stays current with medical literature and emerging practices. Clinical practice focuses on independent evaluation and management of Veterans needing comprehensive pain care, emphasizing prevention and patient self-management.

Supports Medical Center and Service missions by consistently providing courteous, respectful, and tactful interactions with patients, visitors, volunteers, and staff. Communicates clearly, provides accurate information according to established policies, manages conflict constructively, and collaborates with patient advocates, public affairs, primary care partners, legislative contacts, and administrative offices as needed.

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday 7:30 am- 4:30 pm (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).
