Transportation Mntnce Spec I Job Summary Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details. Essential Duties Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities. Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required. Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic. Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices. Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites. Move/picks up litter and roadway debris. Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower. Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education: No education required. Experience: No experience required. Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications. Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment. Preferred Qualifications Commercial Driver’s License Competencies Some knowledge of: The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Some skill in: Using basic mathematical fundamentals Prioritizing and organizing work assignments Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Ability to: Follow verbal and written instructions Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour Subject to noise Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs. Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling Stooping - bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist Kneeling - bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s) Crouching - bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication Visual Acuity - operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment Conditions of Employment This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre‑employment physical. Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
