To provide counseling and guidance for all students
Exempt
Principal
Master's degree from an accredited college or university
Possess and maintain Alabama certification in guidance and/or counseling
Possess and maintain a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate
Knowledge of educational guidance, child development, educational testing and assessments, counseling, and the administration of guidance services
Good public relations skills
Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students of the school assigned
Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
Ability to work with multiple stakeholders in a variety of settings
Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple settings
Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups
Ability to visit classrooms, other schools, and attend off-campus meetings
Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications with the ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders
Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities
Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require
Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and priorities
Assists in providing leadership for all staff and students in assigned school
Assists in conducting staff meetings and trainings to promote efficient functioning of the school, the curriculum, guidance, and counseling
Demonstrates the ability to multi-task, to delegate appropriately, and to prioritize tasks efficiently
Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students
Develops and implements effective programs of guidance and counseling for the students at assigned grade levels
Abides by the American School Counselor Association Code of Ethics
Demonstrates and models regular and predictable attendance
Makes presentations for large and small groups to effectively communicate guidance and counseling information, assessment results, and educational and career planning information
Demonstrates professional appearance and demeanor at all times
Uses technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required
Collaborates with the Assessment, Accountability, and Counseling Coordinator in developing, implementing, and evaluating an annual local school guidance and counseling plan that maximizes student success while being in accordance with standards set forth by the State Plan and local plan
Collaborates with the Assessment, Accountability, and Counseling Coordinator in administering state and local mandated assessments, and consulting with mental health services (both within and outside the school system)
Collaborates with Student Services Coordinator on matters involving attendance, out-of-zone, and all other items related to student services
Collaborates with Secondary Curriculum & Instruction Coordinator on matters related to Virtual School
Counsels with students individually, in small groups, and in classrooms to help each student with needs, planning for post-secondary opportunities, determining academic and vocational paths, and developing a 4-year plan
Serves as promotion coach for 8th and 9th graders if assigned as secondary counselor
Collaborates with local school administration to enroll and withdraw students, to monitor student grades, to set up the master schedule, and to assist with data entry and retrieval from software programs
Assists local school administration and the appropriate Curriculum & Instruction Coordinator with curriculum, instruction, developing strategies to help students succeed, observations, interviews, evaluations, and all other items related to instruction
Collaborates with school personnel, students, and parents with making a smooth transition to the next grade level/school
Provides orientation activities for incoming students and parents
Assists local school administration in developing and implementing meetings, parent education programs, back-to-school meetings, parent night, etc
Assists families with school-related problems and issues
Participates in IEP, 504, PST, ARI, and RTI meetings as needed and develops strategies to meet the needs of students
Creates and manages budgets
Assists local school administration with technology implementation and trainings as needed
Assists local school administration with the development of newly-assigned staff members and assigns mentors as needed
Assists local school administration with communications, through staff meetings and written/electronic correspondence, about information that will keep staff informed of policies, procedures and instructional program changes and updates
Participates in district meetings, state meetings, and other activities that relate to professional development as assigned
Assists local school administration with the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans
Demonstrates high-expectations for self, for staff, and for students, and creates an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and achievable
Informs and interprets to students and parents of test results and their implications for educational and career planning
Interprets and provides training to school staff about test results and strategies to improve student growth and development
Assist students with graduation requirements if assigned as secondary counselor
Assists local school administration with interviewing staff as needed
Uses technology to enter data, generate reports, create presentations, and uses appropriate school system software
Uses effective organizational skills
Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner
Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system
Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member
Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representative groups as required
Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws
Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures
Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Principal
Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule
9 month or 10 month upon Board approval
Performance will be evaluated according to board policy
