Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced and proactive Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead all EHS functions at our chemical manufacturing facility in Marion, Indiana. This critical leadership role is responsible for ensuring full regulatory compliance, fostering a robust safety culture, protecting employee health, and minimizing environmental impact in a high-hazard chemical processing environment. The EHS Manager will serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and drive continuous improvement in EHS performance to support safe, sustainable operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage all environmental, health, and safety programs at the site, ensuring compliance with federal (EPA, OSHA), state (Indiana DEQ/IDEM), and local regulations.
  • Lead environmental permitting activities, including air, water, waste, and stormwater permits; prepare and submit required reports, renewals, and applications.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies (EPA, OSHA, IDEM, local authorities), manage inspections, respond to inquiries, and coordinate audits or investigations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive employee safety training programs, including hazard communication, process safety management (PSM where applicable), lockout/tagout, confined space entry, PPE, and emergency response.
  • Design and continuously improve EHS policies, procedures, and programs, with a focus on behavior-based safety, risk reduction, and incident prevention.
  • Manage hazardous waste programs, including generation, storage, transportation, disposal, and compliance with RCRA and other waste regulations; oversee waste minimization efforts.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and audits to identify and mitigate chemical, physical, ergonomic, and biological hazards.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions; track and report EHS metrics, trends, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to site leadership.
  • Chair or facilitate the site safety committee and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives.
  • Collaborate with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to integrate EHS considerations into process design, equipment modifications, and capital projects.
  • Manage emergency preparedness and response programs, including spill response, fire safety, and crisis management planning.
  • Stay current on evolving EHS regulations and industry best practices, recommending proactive changes to maintain compliance and enhance performance.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • 3–5 years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in the chemical, paper, pulp, food & beverage, or other process-oriented industries with chemical handling.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulations, including OSHA standards, EPA programs (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA), Process Safety Management (PSM), and hazardous materials management.
  • Proven experience interacting with regulatory agencies and managing permitting/compliance activities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all organizational levels.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with EHS management software is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), or similar.
  • Experience in chemical manufacturing or PSM-covered processes.
  • Familiarity with Indiana-specific environmental regulations (IDEM).
