Respiratory Therapist This position is held by a Respiratory Therapist who possesses the knowledge and skill to administer all forms of respiratory care and treatment to our patients. A Brief Overview Works closely with the Director and Clinical Coordinator of Respiratory/Pulmonary Services and is responsible for additional departmental functions as requested, which may include organizing shift responsibilities, providing departmental education, participating in orientation of new staff, and addressing department‑related issues in the absence of the Director or Clinical Coordinator. What you will do Provide adult, pediatric, and neonatal ventilation, including continuous mechanical ventilator support and monitoring for various patient age groups, and support patient transfers within the medical center. Provide non‑invasive positive pressure ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP) when indicated. Collaborate with physicians and nurses to modify therapy based on the patient’s disease process. Educate patients and families on respiratory equipment, infection control practices, and smoking cessation programs. Assist with discharge planning of pulmonary‑impaired patients. Administer aerosolized medications and bronchial hygiene therapy such as PEP, Metaneb, Vest, chest physiotherapy, percussion, and incentive spirometry. Assess efficacy of therapy, recognize and report variations or questionable applications. Teach patients of all ages with all types of disabilities and medical problems. Continuously monitor critically ill patients, measuring oxygen saturation, end‑tidal CO₂, blood gas, and other parameters. Perform oxygen therapy and recognize improper applications. Perform high‑humidity and aerosol therapy. Conduct routine surveillance and equipment inspection to ensure proper use and functioning. Process reusable respiratory equipment, including cleaning, packaging, and delivering to Central Supply for sterilization. Assist with bedside bronchoscopies. Perform bedside pulmonary function screening for OR cases. Execute bedside spontaneous ventilation measurements: vital capacity, tidal volume, negative inspiratory force, and rapid shallow breathing index. Perform arterial blood gas punctures and interpret results, communicating findings to physicians and nurses. Participate in Code Blue and Rapid Response Teams, performing Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Perform emergency intubation when a physician is unavailable, after completing Holy Name Medical Center training and certification. Perform routine and emergency tracheostomy tube changes after training and certification. Perform specialty gas therapy such as heliox therapy when requested. Maintain complete documentation in the electronic medical record, including IPOC, Respiratory Plan of Care, Patient/Family Education Form, and interdisciplinary notes. Complete departmental paperwork and computer entries required for day‑to‑day operations. Provide verbal hand‑off reports to incoming shift. Communicate verbally to nursing and ancillary staff as necessary, providing pertinent patient care information. Participate in patient care rounds. Communicate recommendations for therapeutic changes to physicians and document in the EMR. Maintain timely communication with the Department Director regarding problems or unusual occurrences. Check computer systems and departmental boxes for new or revised orders and execute them. Perform other duties consistent with department and hospital goals. Use free time to complete extra duties to ensure smooth departmental functions and assist co‑workers; clean, process, and set up equipment and code boxes. Adhere to department and hospital policies on safety and infection control. Complete annual mandatory education and competencies, attend new equipment or therapeutic modality in‑services, and view educational online materials. In the absence of the Director/Clinical Coordinator, manage workload distribution among ICU staff. Consult with the Clinical Coordinator or Director for immediate‑attention issues and notify the on‑call supervisor during evening/night, weekend, and holiday hours. Attend departmental meetings; if absent, read and sign minutes. Assist in orientation and education of new staff, Respiratory, EMS, and Nursing students. Perform duties as assigned by the Director. Collaborate as an interdisciplinary team member. Support departmental and organizational goals and initiatives. Education Qualifications Associate’s Degree from a 2‑yr Respiratory Therapy program approved by the NBRC, or Bachelor’s Degree from a 4‑yr Respiratory Therapy program approved by the NBRC. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Training in all aspects of respiratory patient care for adults, children, and infants. Effective written and verbal communication skills plus basic computer proficiency. Licenses and Certifications RCP – Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in New Jersey, required upon hire. CRT – Certified Respiratory Therapist with NBRC credential, eligible upon hire, required. RRT – Registered Respiratory Therapist with NBRC credential, eligible upon hire, required. BCLS – Basic Life Support (American Heart) certification, required upon hire. ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (American Heart) certification within one year, required. Final base compensation will be determined based on employment status, skills, education, and experience. Pay range: $44.00 per hour – $50.60 per hour.
