Van Driver

CLASS SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Assistant Public Works Director, this position safely transports individuals (age 65 and older), to and from various destinations, such as medical appointments, physical therapy, grocery stores, community centers, etc. The driver will portray themselves in a professional manner at all times while providing door-to-door assistance to empower individuals to maintain their independence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class. Allocation of positions to this class will be determined on the amount of time spent in performing the primary duties.)

• Operates a City passenger van to drive qualified older adult Hudson residents to various scheduled appointments, errands, City Hall Hudson Senior Network Foundation Community Room programs and events within a six (6)-mile radius of the center of Hudson while utilizing GPS route instructions.
• Coordinate travel arrangements, including departure times, estimated travel times, and route planning using designated software program.
• Drive the van over designated routes or to assigned destinations according to established schedule while complying with all traffic regulations.
• Regulates heating, lighting and ventilating systems to ensure comfort of all passengers.
• Provides passenger assistance to safely enter and exit the vehicle as needed.
• Observes all state and local regulations concerning the operation of motorized vehicles.
• Ensures vehicle performance by performing daily checks of fuel level, steering functionality, tire pressure, and functioning of all accessories. Puts fuel in the vehicle.
• Notifies supervisor of repairs beyond routine maintenance.
• Maintains a clean and well-maintained vehicle by performing daily exterior and interior
  checks of the vehicle.
• Ensures the proper conduct of individuals on the van and reports flagrant and repeated misbehavior to supervisor.
• Reports all accidents to proper civil authorities and supervisor immediately.
• Answer departmental telephone calls and provide general guidance and assistance.
• Attends meetings as requested or required.
• Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, employees, peers, subordinates, vendors, city officials and the public.
• Must provide a high level of customer service by being courteous, responsive, respectful and helpful in all interactions with superiors, employees, patrons and the general public.
• Must have regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, work varies from inside tight quarters to outside while sometimes exposed to inclement weather, such as wet, cold, hot and/or humid conditions. The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, reach with arms and hands. Employee must have good (or correctable) vision and range of motion for safe driving; must speak and hear sufficiently for safe vehicle operation. The employee is occasionally required to step up, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally assist with moving individuals or items weighing up to 150 pounds. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and at least two (2) or more years of
  driving experience.
• Basic computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Ability to read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to read paper and digital maps to plan routes that balance service needs with available resources.
• Ability and skill to operate a tablet, smartphone, or laptop to access schedules and route information; and to update schedules (additions, cancellations, etc.) in real time.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner.
• Ability to successfully pass the city-required driving course for operation of any city vehicle.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; write routine reports and correspondence; and operate a multi-line telephone.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with superiors, employees, patrons, and the general public.
• Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATE, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS (All required licenses and certificates must be current, and the privileges granted under each cannot be suspended or otherwise encumbered.)

• Possession of a valid State of Ohio Drivers License with an acceptable driving record (no more than 4 points on license).
• Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class C or greater - PREFERRED
• CPR and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
• Completion of Passenger Assistance Training (PAT) through the Department of Aging must be completed within six (6) months of hire.
