Accounting Specialist II

General Purpose of Job Sharing responsibility for accounts payable and receivable to support daily accounting activities, month‑end process, year‑end audit process, special projects; general ledger transactions and reports, balancing, reconciliations, depreciation, tax reports, cash receipts and disbursements, fixed assets and asset management. Requirements Education: Minimum two (2) year associate degree in accounting or related discipline. Preferred four (4) year bachelor’s degree with one year related experience. Preferred completion of RUS Borrower Accounting course within 3 years of hire. Experience: Minimum three (3) years of experience with accounts payable/accounts receivable and/or general ledger accounting. Preferred experience within an electric utility or related industry. Other Requirements: Ability to operate office equipment; work irregular hours; pass background check, physical and drug screen. Normal work hours 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Job Specific Competencies Technical Accounting Knowledge: solid understanding of cost accounting, GAAP, financial reporting, and automated accounting tools; proficiency in Microsoft Office and accounting software. Attention to Detail and Accuracy: planning, organizing, documenting; prepares spreadsheets; escalates complex issues. Communication and Interpersonal Skills: excellent customer service; bilingual English and Spanish preferred. Time Management, Workload Prioritization and Confidentiality: meets deadlines, handles stress, maintains confidentiality, exercises sound judgment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities General Accounting: Journal entries – correct and fixed entries. Audit schedules – maintain audit spreadsheets, respond to auditor inquiries. Account analysis – review ledger accounts for errors and trends. Month‑end entries – calculate and record accruals and allocations. Budgeting – perform data analysis for annual budget, prepare and distribute reports. GL account reconciliation – monitor and reconcile transactions. Write and update job scripts. Maintain accurate records per retention policy. Accounts Payable: Invoice processing – match supporting documents, ensure tax accuracy. Payment process – disburse to vendors with proper documentation and approvals. P‑card transactions – review for supporting documentation, authorization, and taxation. Expense reports – review and enter employee expense reports. Materials – resolve materials that remain uninvoiced. Shared Disciplines As Assigned: Plant Accounting – verify work orders, prepare accuracy and audit reports. Asset Management – maintain plant list, manage depreciation adjustments. Misc. Receivable – prepare invoices for damages, sales, employee purchases; manage collections. Large Power – read substation meters, coordinate with tech services, analyze data, provide reports. Credit Balance Refund/Unclaimed Property – process refunds, manage database, file required reports. Taxes – budget, prepare, file property tax returns; reconcile spreadsheets with ledger. Sales and Use – prepare property tax returns, maintain knowledge of Florida sales tax code. Franchise and Municipal – calculate, remit, provide audit reports. Physical Demands and Work Environment Regularly sit, talk, hear, walk, occasionally stand, use hands, reach, climb, stoop, lift up to 10 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color vision, and focus adjustment. General office environment; moderate noise level.
