Speech-Language Pathologist
Public school Speech-Language Pathologists are communication specialists who work with students who are identified with language disabilities, articulation deficits, dysfluency speech, and voice disorders. Responsibilities include communicating, collaborating, and cooperating with colleagues, supervisors, and students. They serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement. They also provide a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language impairments. Additionally, they provide screening to identify speech-impaired children as requested by Child Study Teams. They assist in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialists in the community. They provide appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students' needs and correct existing speech or language disabilities. They collaborate with classroom teachers and other school staff members to implement programs throughout the student's daily activities. They provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families when appropriate. They participate in all mandatory training or training appropriate to the position as required by the district. They ensure a safe, pleasant, and effective educational atmosphere, provide discipline as necessary, and enforce school policy.
Minimum qualifications include a Master's Degree in Speech and Language Pathology. A minimum of 60 semester hours of academic credit in normal aspects of human communication, development thereof, and clinical techniques for evaluation and management of speech and language disorders. A minimum of 300 clock hours of supervised practicum experience with people who present a variety of communication disorders, to be acquired in conjunction with academic training, 150 hours of which shall be obtained on the graduate level. ND Teaching License with Certification as Speech/Language Pathologist and a Special Education Credential. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of manager, clients, customers, and the general public. Applied communications is an integral part of the curriculum. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situation. Applied mathematics is integral. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. The ability to demonstrate on the computer is necessary. Troubleshooting the equipment is also a performed strength.
This position reports to: Building Principal. Internal and external clientele and purpose of contact example: Personal contact with students, staff, parents/guardians, faculty, and administrators is an essential part of the position and requires the ability to share information and must be sensitive to people and their needs. The position may handle confidential and private data. Problem solving work involves differing situations and the ability to rapidly access and prioritize competing demands. It is important to identify the problem and resolve it promptly and tactfully. Freedom to act - decisions position makes and decisions referred to higher authority. The incumbent performs tasks under the direction of a certified teacher and responds to day-to-day needs, answer questions, and responds to emergent issues. Non-emergent issues are discussed with the Teacher or Building Principal. The incumbent takes the initiative to ensure completion of all tasks and will adjust priorities to accommodate competing workload demands. Potential for additional earnings staff who hold an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification are eligible for an annual stipend of $1,000*. Special Education staff may be eligible for an annual case management stipend of $3,000*. *Full stipend amounts are based on a full contract year. Staff hired after the contract year begins will receive a prorated amount. Please see the Fargo Public Schools Teachers Contract attached to this posting for more information.
