Cath Lab Special Procedures Technologist

Assists credentialed providers with diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures in cardiac and vascular laboratory environments. Works under the direct supervision of a credentialed provider and performs duties in a manner that supports teamwork and reflects KPNW’s mission and philosophy.

Essential Responsibilities

• Monitors radiation safety and completes related documentation and compliance tasks.
  • Performs quality assurance checks on X-ray equipment and protective garments and accessories.
  • Troubleshoots equipment issues and initiates vendor service calls.
  • Assists the hospital radiation safety officer with CVL surveys and compliance documentation.
  • Uses IVUS, Site Rite, atherectomy devices, pacemakers/ICDs, and coronary angiography and intervention equipment.
• Serves as scrub, monitor/recorder, and X-ray technician for assigned CVL procedures.
  • Prepares and positions patients for invasive procedures.
  • Assists with cardiovascular tests and records patients’ hemodynamic activity using specialized electronic test equipment, recording devices, and laboratory instruments.
  • Obtains hemostasis at arterial and venous access sites after procedures, including sheath removal and safe management of hemostatic devices.
  • Retrieves PACS images for presentation during cases.
  • Sets up, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment used during procedures.
  • Recognizes cardiac arrhythmias and hemodynamic waveforms and alerts the credentialed provider and other team members according to protocol.
• Administers intracoronary and/or intra-arterial medications under direct physician supervision.
  • Prepares and maintains a sterile field using aseptic technique.
  • Supports the physician in the sterile field during assigned CVL procedures.
  • Prepares, maintains, and operates hemodynamic and monitoring equipment.
  • Provides basic and advanced life support, including defibrillation, when required.
  • Maintains proficiency in point-of-care testing, including activated clotting time (ACT), oxygen saturation, glucose, and arterial blood gas (ABG) testing.
  • Provides patient education about procedures.
  • Restocks supplies, maintains a clean work area, and files documentation.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• Experience: At least 12 continuous months of cardiac cath lab, EP, and/or special procedures work experience within the past three years. This experience requirement is waived for current KP Coalition employees under the National Agreement.
• Education: Successful completion of an accredited radiologic technology program (ARRT).
• Licenses and certifications:
  • Certified Radiologic Technologist (Washington) or Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist License (Oregon).
  • Within 12 months of hire, obtain one of the following: Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES), ARRT Vascular-Interventional Radiography (VI), or ARRT Cardiac-Interventional Radiography (CI).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within one month of hire.
  • Radiologic Technologist certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within two months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years of recent EP, interventional cardiac, and/or vascular lab experience.
• Recent angiography/cath lab experience.
• Strong organizational, time-management, prioritization, planning, attention-to-detail, problem-solving, decision-making, judgment, technical, communication, interpersonal, customer relations, and organizational relations skills.
• Adaptability and flexibility.
• CCI Registered Cardiac Invasive Specialist (RCIS), Registered Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES), ARRT Cardiac-Interventional Radiography (CI), or ARRT Vascular-Interventional Radiography (VI) credential.
• EKG rhythm and dysrhythmia recognition.
