Summary Thank you for your interest in the Licensed Practical Nurse – Surgical Specialty Clinics position for the Patient Care Services within the Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Licensure: Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or District of Columbia. Any licensure revocation, suspension, denial, restriction, limitation, or probationary status may allow appointment only in accordance with the provisions in VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Grandfathering provision applies to current VHA employees meeting criteria. Grade Qualifications: Must meet additional requirements for GS‑3, GS‑4, GS‑5, and GS‑6 as outlined in the detailed qualification list below. Preferred Experience: Experience working in urology clinics, outpatient settings, or surgical units where urology procedures are performed. Familiarity with procedures such as catheterizations (including suprapubic and intermittent), cystoscopy, bladder irrigation, prostate biopsies, and assisting with minor surgeries. Reference: For more information on this qualification standard, visit Duties Provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of an RN or MD/DO. Assist with diagnostic and surgical interventions for patients with acute or chronic medical problems. Administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous) and document any changes in patient condition. Recognize and respond to urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of RN/MD and initiate appropriate emergency interventions. Educate patients and family members on disease processes, medication regimens, and post‑operative care. Collaborate with RN and MD/DO to train and pre‑orient less experienced LPNs/LVNs and nursing assistants. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes. Serve as a preceptor in orienting, educating, and training less experienced LPNs/LVNs or nursing assistants related to support duties for complex diagnostic tests or specialized procedures. Benefits Full‑time schedule: Monday to Friday, 0730‑1600. Competitive salary with regular increases.
