Job Title Obstetric (OB) Clinical Instructor – Practical Nurse Department & Reporting Department: EducationReports To: Director of Clinical Operations Summary The Obstetric (OB) clinical instructor serves as the expert in the clinical setting and imparts the knowledge and skills each student needs to succeed. The instructor delivers high‑quality instruction, evaluates and resolves student issues, and ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Select and utilize a variety of approved course materials and teaching methods that address all learning modalities to meet individual student needs. Assess student learning using appropriate methods and demonstrate effectiveness through strong outcomes in student retention, success, and attendance, measured by the faculty development program. Instruct students in the principles and application of physical, biological, and psychological subjects related to the role of the PN/RN as necessary. Plan and coordinate daily learning experiences that individualize both student and client needs. Provide learning opportunities that enhance student development in the nursing process, interpersonal skills, and technical procedures. Provide guidance and education to PN/RN students on problem solving and effective communication with co‑workers, patients, and family members across diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic levels. Participate in campus‑wide orientation of RN/PN students. Supervise and monitor students on an ongoing basis as they perform technical and patient‑care skills. Oversee and assess patient status to assure appropriate learning experiences. Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Operations, Academic Clinical Liaison, and the Director of Nursing to monitor student progress. Advise students on attendance, grades, and issues throughout the module and mid‑term to ensure successful completion of their clinical. Complete Note to File (NTF) records in a timely manner as directed by the Director of Clinical Operations. Maintain accurate records of students’ time and attendance, evaluations, experiences, performance, and progress. Report any concerns to the Director of Clinical Operations. Consult with the Director of Clinical Operations and the Director of Nursing regarding actions to be taken with students who are in jeopardy or whose performance does not meet clinical standards. Collaborate with medical and nursing personnel to evaluate and improve teaching techniques throughout the externship module. Make recommendations for improvement of the clinical experience. Participate in the development of procedures, clinical protocols, and forms as requested by the Director of Clinical Operations. Manage the clinical setting environment through compliance with campus policies, including clinical setting management, attendance, punctuality, and professionalism. Ensure instructor preparedness before class by completing required information on the course syllabus and keeping students abreast of applicable updates. Monitor and prepare supplies and equipment to ensure readiness prior to clinical; notify the Director of Clinical Operations when attention is required. Participate in faculty, staff, committee, and in‑service meetings. Attendance at commencement is strongly encouraged. Demonstrate professional growth in the subject through activities such as membership in educational associations, professional organizations, continuing education, related business experience, educational research, and awareness of current practices and standards. Maintain all educational activity in a legal and ethical manner. Maintain employer relationships through at least annual contacts with employers; visits may be virtual (Zoom or telephone) and documented on the Liaison Form. Facilitate all clinical courses in the curriculum if OB is not available, except for Pediatrics unless experienced. Other related tasks as assigned and deemed necessary. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional verbal and written communication and active listening skills Strong background knowledge of hospital and nursing policies, procedures, and standards of care Ability to work independently and within a team environment Strong time‑management skills and ability to work under pressure Able to multitask, prioritize, and demonstrate resourcefulness and problem‑solving skills Ability to follow policies and procedures and support the Director of Nursing, Managing Director, and campus needs Positive attitude toward school activities Proficiency with basic office equipment, computers, and applications including Microsoft Office Suite Minimum Qualifications Current, unencumbered Michigan licensure as a registered nurse (RN) with obstetrics experience required (e.g., Labor and Delivery or Care of Childbearing mothers as an NP or comparable position) Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing science (BSN) or associate degree in nursing (ADN) actively pursuing a BSN; documented enrollment in a BSN program required for instructional eligibility Exception paperwork submitted with the Michigan Board of Nursing (MBON) prior to teaching At least one year of documented clinical teaching experience related to the course taught (preferred) Working/Physical Demands May be required to work late and occasional weekends to support business needs. The role requires seeing, talking, hearing, standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods, with sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate phone, computer keyboard, and other office equipment.
