School Nurse

General responsibilities include enhancing the educational process by the modification or removal of health-related barriers to learning and by promoting an optimal level of wellness. Provides skilled nursing care to medically fragile children.

Essential duties include:

• Providing skilled nursing care to medically fragile children.
• Assisting sick or injured students (calling parents of ill/injured students and assisting until parent arrives) and staff, performing routine and emergency first aid.
• Administering medication to appropriate students, with parental permission and a doctor's order for prescription medication; keeping medication permission forms on file.
• Maintaining student health records, reviewing records of entering students for immunizations, ensuring all components of School Health Entrance Requirement are complete, noting health conditions documented on forms, collecting information for state reports, and keeping emergency information up to date.
• Training staff to administer medications under certain circumstances in the nurse's absence or for field trips. Ensuring proper documentation; maintaining record of CPR, First Aid trained staff and posting it in the clinic.
• Referring additional health concerns as appropriate to a guidance counselor, school psychologist, physician, Child Protective Services, school administrator, health department officials, school 504 Coordinator.
• Administering individual mandated screening of vision and hearing, height, weight, dental/oral, and scoliosis; evaluating, referring and following up as required by Virginia school law and School Board policy.
• Completing necessary forms and procedures for bloodborne pathogen exposure incidents and situations related to Workers Compensation as outlined in Exposure Control Plan, School Board Policy and Regulations.
• Serving as a member of the School Crisis and Child Study Team, as directed by Principal, participating in wellness programs for staff, inservice education, and attending all regularly scheduled staff meetings.
• Supplying and adequately maintaining the school clinic; checking first aid supplies and equipment daily; securing medications including controlled substances as required.
• Providing immunizations as dictated by School Board.
• Managing outbreaks of infectious illnesses by utilizing knowledge of infectious illness processes with input from Health Services Coordinator, physicians, the health department and district guidelines to determine criteria for school exclusion; following health department directives regarding management of such illnesses.
• Notifying appropriate staff members on a need-to-know basis, of students with health concerns, providing necessary in-service training and/or emergency care plans.
• Compiling a list of students with health problems and appropriately distributing to administration and other school personnel as needed.
• Serving as a liaison with public health department, health care providers and other community agencies.
• Ensuring compliance with law that all schools with at least one student with diabetes have at all times two staff members trained in the administration of insulin and glucagon.
• May develop or assist with development of Individual Health Care Plans for students with medical conditions, including allergies; may educate appropriate staff on necessary components of such health care plan including criteria for medical emergencies and specific actions to take for inclusion on IEP or 504 plans.
• Ensuring compliance with all laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information and obtaining written consent of parent/guardian to share information.
• Performing clerical duties requiring the use of computers, typing, filing and duplicating related to school nurse functions.
• Assisting in enforcing rules and discipline; performing student supervision duties as required.
• Advising administrators regarding appropriate interventions to meet student needs.
• Advising administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff (with consent) regarding all students with food allergies; developing or obtaining care plans for students with food allergies and advising school personnel in recognizing the signs of food allergies and the appropriate steps to take including the administration of epinephrine.
• Performing related work as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include maintaining functional knowledge of current health issues and immunizations as they relate to school age children; knowledge of student instruction and management practices, procedures and techniques; general knowledge of school system rules and procedures for classroom, halls, cafeteria, library and transportation; ability to guide, direct, teach, and counsel students; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability and skill to make physical, social and emotional assessments requiring professional nursing knowledge and judgment. Ability to do basic keyboarding skills. Contacts with students, parents, and staff may be non-cooperative and require diplomacy, skillful and thoughtful debate, tact and confidentiality.

Education and experience include: Required: Must have a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse. Must have a minimum of one year of nursing experience in a school setting or three years experience as a Registered Nurse. Must maintain current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid from a recognized provider (e.g., American Heart Association). Preferred: Masters Degree. Bachelor's degree in nursing. Three years experience as a Registered Nurse working with school aged children.

Location: Assigned Building. Work Schedule: 10M – 217 Days – 7.25 Hrs. Paygrade: 15. Salary Scale: Uniform. FLSA Status: Exempt.

Physical conditions include: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment. Duties are typically performed in a school clinic and other school settings such as classrooms, gym, cafeteria and recreational areas. Frequent movement throughout the school facilities is required. Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds and moving of students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. Position requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and grasping. Occasional exposure to potentially infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens is necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary. Occasional travel with students on field trips or athletic events could be necessary. Daily close and personal contact with students and regular contact with school teachers, counselors, psychologists and other specialists is necessary. External contact with community health care and social services providers, by phone and written correspondence is required. Occasional attendance to after school meetings as well as mandatory nurse meetings and/or trainings may be necessary.
