Currently employed physicians in the VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from a VA‑approved school (allopathic or osteopathic). Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training: Physicians must have completed an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME or AOA). Alternate residency pathways: (1) ACGME or AOA accreditation with a two‑year independent practice; (2) One year of post‑medical school training followed by two years of independent practice; (3) Non‑US residency followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States. Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency training may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) subject to restrictions. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Board certification or eligibility in Cardiovascular Disease and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology. Training and experience at a high‑volume mechanical circulatory support and heart transplant center. Physical, cognitive, and emotional fitness evaluation required prior to appointment. Capability to interact with patients and health‑care personnel in a caring and professional manner and to tolerate physically taxing workloads. For more information on this qualification standard, please visit Duties Participate in heart failure care at VABHS with a focus on advanced heart failure and the new Mechanical Support and Heart Transplant Program in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Division at BWH. Provide inpatient cardiology, advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplant services, as well as outpatient ambulatory continuity care clinics. Educate and mentor residents, cardiovascular disease fellows, and subspecialty fellows in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology. Support VA general cardiology ward services and outpatient cardiology responsibilities. Perform overnight and weekend on‑call duties. Maintain a track record of research and publication in clinical cardiology, including health equity and quality of care, or equivalent academic activity. Achieve an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School as Instructor, Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
