Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic

Summary Position located at the Department of Veterans Affairs Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS), a Level 1c facility within the VA Sierra Pacific Network (VISN 21). VACCHCS offers comprehensive health care services including primary, medical and surgical subspecialties, inpatient and outpatient mental health care. Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date 06/08/2026. Experience: no specific length required; candidates must demonstrate sufficient training or experience to perform the duties of this position. Evidence of knowledge, skills, and ability should be supported by detailed resume descriptions. Applicants will be evaluated per OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The Screening‑Out Element is the first criterion used. Eligible candidates are further rated on the remaining job elements: equipment assembly, installation, repair; interpretation of instructions and specifications (including blueprint reading); materials and technical practices; troubleshooting, use and maintenance of tools and equipment. Experience may include paid, unpaid, and volunteer work through National Service programs such as Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. Volunteer experience that demonstrates critical competencies is credited. Physical requirements and working conditions are described in VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties Perform fault isolation, repairs, and adjustments on water‑based and refrigerant‑based HVAC systems, including multi‑zone direct expansion heating and cooling, energy recovery ventilators, chilled and hot water air conditioning, fan coil units, and air handling units. Install, isolate, replace components, and conduct basic programming of direct digital systems (DDC) for monitoring and controlling HVAC and refrigeration. Isolate, replace components, and adjust pneumatic control systems for HVAC and refrigeration monitoring and control. Install and perform minor repairs on valve systems—manual, electrically powered—water pumps, air control dampers, and air compressors. Install and repair air conveyance ducting—metal, vinyl, plastic, or fabric—and insulate such ducting. Perform minor repairs on steam‑to‑hot‑water heat exchangers. Install, isolate, repair, and adjust refrigeration systems for pharmaceutical storage and manufacturing, including storage of blood products, human organs, research specimens, cadavers, chemical reagents, ice generation, and bulk food storage. Conduct testing, adjustment, and balancing of air distribution systems using capture hoods, balometers, manometers, vane anemometers, and pitot tubes.
