Job Description - RN II - ECMO Specialist Program (Part time) 7a-7p (937195) Job Summary This position works under the general supervision of a physician, advanced practice provider, and/or nursing leadership to provide nursing services in care and treatment of patients requiring and/or potentially requiring Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. Benefits PPO medical plan, available day one at no cost for full‑time employee‑only coverage 100% coverage for preventive healthcare – no copay Paid Time Off, available day one Retirement Programs through the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) Paid Parental Leave Benefit Wellness programs Tuition Reimbursement Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Qualified Employer Experience and Education Required Education: Graduate of an approved/accredited nursing program either by a governmental authority or nursing board Experience: 3 years critical care nursing experience and 2 years of ECMO specialist experience Licenses and Certifications: NLC (Nursing Licensure Compact‑BNE) upon hire; ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) upon hire; BLS (Basic Life Support) upon hire; NIHSS (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale) upon hire Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing Experience: Experience with mechanical circulatory devices (IABP, Impella, LVAD); Previous charge nurse and/or leadership experience Licenses and Certifications: CCRN (Critical Care RN); E‑AEC (ELSO Adult ECMO Practitioner Certification); CES‑A (Certified ECMO Specialist – Adult) Job Duties Respond to all ECMO cannulations outside the OR Operate and manage the ECMO device including circuit set‑up, priming, and initiation of ECMO support; interpret ABGs and adjust ECMO flow, gases, and temperature; access the ECMO circuit for therapies such as CRRT and plasmapheresis; continuously monitor and interpret patient data including hemodynamics, ECMO parameters, labs, and imaging; perform emergency interventions to any part of the circuitry Round on high‑risk patients in the critical care units, including code blue activations, ECMO watch patients, and patients on mechanical circulatory support Participate in multidisciplinary rounds on all current ECMO patients and provide patient and/or family education as needed Provide support during PT/OT, bedside procedures, traveling off unit, etc. Monitor ECMO equipment for appropriate care and function, restock disposable equipment, and manage emergency ECMO carts Assist with the development of policies, procedures, and clinical standards of care related to the ECMO program; abide by all protocols governing patient care Assist in training and onboarding of other ECMO clinicians Participate in quality improvement initiatives and research Maintain communication with the ECMO leadership team and escalation of safety events Maintain all competencies and continuing education requirements as set forth by the ECMO Program Perform other duties as assigned When caring for ECMO patients as the assigned ECMO Specialist, adhere to the Critical Care RN Job Duties, including performing assessments, planning and prioritizing care, documenting interventions, and providing education to patients, families, and caregivers Security and EEO Statement Security: This position is security‑sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
