Physician - Primary Care (Sioux Falls)

Summary

The position is located at the Royal C. Johnson VA Health Care System in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred to the hiring manager until the closing of the announcement.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• For VA physicians involved in academic training programs, board certification for faculty status may be required.
• Approved residencies include programs approved by ACGME or AOA as published for the year the residency or fellowship was completed.
• Alternatively, one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full and unrestricted license in the United States.
• Alternatively, non‑US residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States with duties related to the position.
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis.
• PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
• PRPs have a scope of practice allowing certain restricted duties under supervision.
• Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
• In rare circumstances, the Facility Director can submit a request for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement.

Duties

• The Physician is an integral part of the Primary Care team and is called upon to perform the following:
  • Provides total care of Veterans' medical needs by performing history and physical exam, ordering lab tests, radiology studies, and screening studies.
  • Evaluates tests, develops treatment and follow‑up plan, and includes medication, medical equipment, and home‑based interventions within guidelines of the supervising physician.
  • Provides outpatient follow‑up visits, post‑discharge follow‑up, and manages care with specialty and sub‑specialty medical providers.
  • Patient care is provided through face‑to‑face visits and/or other modalities (group clinics, telephone clinics, secure messaging).
  • Assists in preparing the patient and/or family, teaching health promotion and disease prevention, accumulating data and medical problems, and presenting patient‑centered discussion for scheduling with appropriate Primary Care services.
  • Completes patient encounters, notes, and correctly codes visits in accordance with coding guidelines.
  • Acts as the focal point of the designated outpatient clinic, serving as the contact person for consultant services regarding patient care and providing consults to Primary Care for other services.
  • Provides assistance to the Primary Care Department with duties that may be requested, including data assimilation for VA reports, quality assurance programs, or others as determined by the Chief of Primary Care or Chief of Staff.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of Veterans served in Sioux Falls VAMC Primary Care Department, including changes associated with aging and ability to provide care based on physical, psycho/social, cultural, safety, and other age‑related factors.
  • Maintains skills, proficiencies, and professional knowledge required for licensing and clinical scope of practice.
  • Provides instruction/preceptorship for physician assistant students, physician assistant residents, and Nurse Practitioner students from various schools across the region in the Primary Care Department clinic.
  • Provides instruction to pharmacy students in the Primary Care Department clinic regarding physical/history and medical instruction.
  • Provides instruction to new Primary Care Department providers regarding routine policies and procedures of patient care.
  • Operates in a Program Manager role assuming additional duties within the Primary Care Service Line.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200 000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply for the incentive.
