Dental Laboratory Technician

Summary This position is located within the Dental Service/Dental Laboratory Section of the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System – Redlands, CA. Qualifications SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS‑7) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Dental Laboratory Technician. Specialized experience includes: use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates, and hours worked per week. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed one and one‑half years (1 1⁄2) of graduate level education directly related to the Dental Laboratory Technician position. One year of full‑time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full‑time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study. Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combination of experience and education as described above to fully meet the requirements of this position. The education portion must include courses directly related to the work of this position. A full year of work is considered to be 35‑40 hours of work per week. Duties THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION – YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION. Major duties and responsibilities include: Collaborates with a Fellowship Trained Prosthodontist – Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and General Dentists to design and fabricate complex dental or intra‑oral maxillofacial appliances. Knowledge of oral anatomy – tooth morphology and dentition. Knowledge of laboratory materials, tools, equipment – and a very high degree of skill in their use. Constructs routine full and partial dentures, dental splints, and obturators; model work for fixed prostheses and other laboratory products to support the treatment needs of staff dentists. Pours primary and final impressions. Fabricates custom trays, bite rims, provisional prostheses, fluoride trays, night guards, stints, transitional partials, and etc. Mounts casts on articulators. Sets teeth for trial dentures/partials. Investigates, packs, processes, and finishes dentures/palliatives. Provides education, training, and instruction to other clinic personnel.
