Substitute School NurseReports to Director of NursingDept./School Health Services/Various Campuses as NeededWage/Hour Status Nonexempt-Established Substitute RN Pay RateDate Revised 7/2016Primary Purpose:Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventative health practices for students.Qualifications:Education/Certification:Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education programValid registered RN license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners or LVN LicenseCertified by Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct vision, hearing and spinal screeningCPR/AED CertificationSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student's health defectsStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to implement policies and proceduresExperience:Minimum of two years nursing experience, preferably in community or pediatric healthMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Nursing Services:Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures.Serve as health advocate for students.Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached) or as deemed necessary.Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.Perform screening procedures as required by Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Educational Agency, and district policy. Make referrals and appropriate follow up as necessary.Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.Instruction:Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.Consultation:Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents and community.Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with student, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission of principal.Communicate regularly with principal and health care coordinator regarding health services issues.Administration:Review and evaluate immunization records.Enforce procedures to ensure proper program administration according to district policy.Supervise and train LVN in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated electronic health records on all students.Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.Report potential health and safety hazards to principal/designee.Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.Professional Development:Maintain certification in CPR/AED, vision and hearing and spinal screening.Model behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.Other:Other related duties as assigned.Supervisory Responsibilities:Direct the work of any assigned LVN.Equipment Used:Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, vision screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, AED, personal computer, copier, and fax.Working Conditions:Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress.
