We are looking for a Commercial and Product Counsel with 5-8 years of experience to join as the second major legal hire at an AI-native law firm that's redefining how startups receive legal support. This is a high-impact role where your work will directly shape the company's trajectory, reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts for clients, building scalable legal playbooks, and partnering with product and engineering to improve AI-assisted legal workflows.
What will you be doing?
- Reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts for late-stage startup clients (Series A to Series B, B2B SaaS companies)
- Advising clients on product, privacy, and corporate matters as an extension of their in-house legal team
- Building and codifying review playbooks and quality standards that the rest of the team ramps against
- Partnering closely with product and engineering to make the AI-powered legal platform faster and more accurate
- Working at a high pace (Mon-Fri 9am-8pm, Sat 11am-5pm) in a tight-knit, early-stage team environment
Key Requirements
- J.D. and active California bar membership in good standing
- 5-8 years of legal experience with significant commercial/transactional work supporting technology companies
- In-house counsel experience required (ideally as sole counsel or first legal hire at a startup)
- Willingness to work 6 days a week in-office in San Francisco at a high-intensity pace (11-5 on Saturday)
- Strong communication skills and comfort operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous, high-ownership environment
Role responsibilities
- Review and negotiate commercial contracts; advise on product and privacy matters
- Partner closely with legal and product teams
- Interpret contract terms and surface key obligations, risks, and anomalies
- Operate internal tooling to streamline review
- Spot inefficiencies and patterns in the review process
- Standardize and codify recurring contract types, review playbooks, and quality bars
- Protect turnaround and SLA commitments
- Partner with operations to evolve legal services delivery
- On-site work policy: 6 days in-office in Union Square, San Francisco (Mon-Fri 9am-8pm, Sat 11am-5pm)
