Safety And Risk Management Coordinator

The Safety and Risk Management Coordinator supports the University's comprehensive safety, risk management, loss prevention, and regulatory compliance programs. Under the direction of the Safety and Risk Manager, the Coordinator assists in the administration, coordination, and implementation of programs designed to promote a safe and compliant environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and University operations.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Safety Inspections, Hazard Identification, and Corrective Action

• Conduct routine safety inspections of University buildings, facilities, work areas, and other locations.
• Identify and document unsafe conditions, hazards, and deficiencies.
• Communicate findings and recommended corrective actions to appropriate departments.
• Track and follow up on corrective actions to support timely resolution.
• Maintain inspection documentation and records.

Safety and Risk Management Compliance and Audits

• Maintain records and documentation necessary to support compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations, University of Louisiana System requirements, and University policies.
• Assist with preparation for Louisiana Office of Risk Management (ORM) audits, regulatory inspections, and other external reviews.
• Coordinate audit documentation and track findings, corrective action plans, and resolution.
• Monitor applicable regulatory and University requirements and assist with communicating updates to departments

Accident, Incident, and Near-Miss Investigations

• Assist with the investigation and documentation of workplace accidents, injuries, incidents, property damage, and near-miss events.
• Assist in identifying contributing and root causes and developing corrective and preventive recommendations.
• Coordinate with supervisors, departments, Human Resources, University Police, Facilities Management, and other appropriate offices.
• Track corrective actions and identify recurring incidents, trends, and conditions requiring additional risk mitigation

Safety Training and Awareness

• Assist with developing, coordinating, and delivering safety and risk management training for faculty, staff, student employees, and other University personnel.
• Coordinate monthly and quarterly safety awareness initiatives.
• Maintain training schedules, attendance records, materials, and completion documentation.
• Develop and distribute safety communications and educational materials.
• Provide departments with guidance regarding safety policies, procedures, and best practices.

Fire, Life Safety, and Emergency Preparedness

• Assist with fire and life safety inspections throughout the University.
• Assist with planning, coordinating, conducting, and documenting evacuation drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
• Identify fire and life safety deficiencies and assist with coordinating corrective actions.
• Provide guidance to departments regarding evacuation procedures and emergency preparedness.
• Maintain appropriate inspection and drill documentation.

Loss Prevention and Risk Reduction

• Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of University loss prevention and risk reduction programs.
• Collaborate with departments to identify safety hazards and operational risks.
• Assist with conducting risk assessments and evaluating existing controls and mitigation measures.
• Recommend corrective and preventive measures to reduce the likelihood and severity of incidents, injuries, property damage, and other losses.
• Assist in monitoring the effectiveness of risk reduction measures.

Records, Reporting, Data Management, and Technical Support

• Maintain accurate and organized safety and risk management records, including training records, inspection reports, audit materials, incident documentation, and corrective action records.
• Prepare reports, dashboards, metrics, summaries, and other information requested by the Safety and Risk Manager or University leadership.
• Assist with analyzing safety data to identify trends, recurring deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
• Maintain tracking systems for inspections, training, incidents, audits, and corrective actions.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to University departments regarding safety policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and recognized safety practices.

Professional Development, Committees, and Other Responsibilities

• Participate in safety committees, meetings, training sessions, emergency exercises, and University initiatives as assigned.
• Maintain current knowledge of safety, risk management, emergency preparedness, and regulatory requirements.
• Promote effective communication and collaboration among University departments regarding safety and risk management.
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Safety and Risk Manager.

Qualifications

Minimum:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, Emergency Management, Public Administration, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
• Two (2) years of professional experience in safety, risk management, environmental health and safety, compliance, emergency management, or a related field.

OR

• An equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience that demonstrates the knowledge and competencies required to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Preferred:

• Experience working in a higher education, governmental, healthcare, industrial, or similarly complex organization.
• Experience working with the Louisiana Office of Risk Management.
• Knowledge of OSHA standards and workplace safety requirements.
• Experience conducting safety inspections and hazard assessments.
• Experience assisting with accident and incident investigations.
• Experience developing or delivering safety training.
• Experience coordinating emergency drills or exercises.
• Experience with safety audit preparation and corrective action tracking.
• Professional certification or training in occupational safety, risk management, emergency management, or a related discipline.
