The Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for assisting the Fire Chief with planning, directing, and administering all activities related to the City's Fire Department and the cities served by the Mound Fire Department. Responsibilities may include supervising staff; overseeing the development and administration of long- and short-range plans, policies, procedures, programs, goals, and objectives; assisting the Emergency Preparedness Director; preparing and administering budgets; and performing related duties. Scope of Impact:
The duties and responsibilities of this job are performed with latitude for independent judgement in accordance with Department and City policies, Federal, State and Local regulations and are based on detailed knowledge of department operations. Work is subject to periodic review by the supervisor, who provides input on approval of recommendations and discusses assignments, priorities and work.

Essential Duties

- Serve as a command officer and assist the Fire Chief with overseeing day-to-day operations of the fire department.
- Serve as a fire inspector, and the lead training officer to support fire suppression, fire inspection, fire prevention and other emergency services.
- Provide positive leadership, mentoring and discipline when needed of all fire department personnel with staff and department success as a primary focus.
- Responsible for the safety and well-being of all personnel under their supervision.
- Improve department technology; including iPads, radios, pagers, report management systems, and policy management systems.
- Responsible for the inspection, documentation and follow up of commercial property, schools, and apartment complex fire inspections.
- Train and develop experienced and probationary firefighters with focus on firefighting best practices.
- Assist with establishing and implementing department policies and standard operating procedures.
- Support and implement strategic planning to support future department needs to meet financial and operational goals.
- Assist the City of Mound Emergency Management Director as the Emergency Management Coordinator.
- Support the department life safety and fire prevention initiatives, programs and training including public education programs.
- Maintain efficient communications with the fire station, address department related matters, and settle disputes or disagreements in a timely, fair and just manner.
- Support staff development through monitoring performance, providing professional coaching on conduct and morale and supporting succession planning.
- Uphold a code of professional conduct, confidentiality and act as a role model and mentor for others.
- Ensure good public relations are practiced during job duties and responsibilities.
- Perform courtesy home and daycare fire and safety inspections upon request.
- Investigate complaints and makes inspections of existing buildings to determine if violations, hazards or illegal conditions exist relating to structure and their use.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
- Local and national building and fire codes.
- Standard department policies and standard operating procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications that are submitted.
- Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and to enforce code regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
- Building construction methods and the sources and types of fire hazards and fire prevention devices and equipment.
- Fire prevention methods and municipal and state ordinances and regulations relating to fire prevention.
- Ability to use a personal computer and accompanying software, particularly the Microsoft Suite. Familiarity with First Due and Lexipol preferred.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state and local officials, contractors, property owners, and occupants.

- Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration or similar
- Fire Instructor I & II, Live Fire Instructor and Instructor-in Charge certified
- Fire Officer I & II certified
- Completion of Advanced Fire Inspector course or equivalent.
- First Responder Inspector certified, formerly Fire Inspector I.
