Job Title: Emergency Room Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Room Nurse Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Variable (Nights/Days) Hours per Shift: 36 hours Experience: Minimum of one year clinical nurse experience preferred License: Current, valid, full, and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska Certifications: BLS and PALS upon hire; ACLS must be obtained within six months of hire Must-Have: Current Alaska license, flu vaccination Description: The clinical nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages. Professional knowledge and consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments are required. Independence in completing assignments is essential. Clinical decisions are made independently during the scheduled shift. Complete accountability for all actions taken is expected. The nurse consults with the appropriate manager/supervisor and/or ancillary department in difficult situations. The ability to react calmly and make sound nursing judgments in emergency situations is crucial. Proper delegation and supervision of nursing assistants or technicians are necessary. The nurse promotes excellence in patient care. Safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients is implemented, considering multisystem disease and treatment complications. Prioritizing care based on acuity and patient preference is important. The nurse anticipates potential problems and adapts to changes in patient status and unusual occurrences. Initiating, managing, and documenting nursing procedures consistent with scientific principles and policies is expected. Knowledge of proper equipment use is required. Age-specific medications and therapeutics must be accurately administered. The nurse is responsible for carrying out medical and nursing care plans and coordinating patient care activities. Initiating action to reduce or prevent risks to patients is expected. Providing individualized, goal-oriented nursing care to facilitate healing is essential. Explaining tests, procedures, and disease processes to patients and significant others is necessary. The nurse follows through on care plans by teaching and demonstrating essential skills. Communication and interaction with patients and significant others must be positive and supportive. Counseling using emotional, intellectual, and psychological supports is important. Steps should be taken to decrease stress and increase coping mechanisms for patients and their families. Evaluating patient progress towards goals and directing new goal-setting is expected. Documentation of the patient’s response to care is essential. Closing out patient care plans by discharge and ensuring aftercare plans are in place is a priority. Assessment through interviewing, observation, and nursing processes is completed. The nurse identifies problems and nursing diagnoses by recognizing the impact of health problems. Distinguishing between normal and abnormal assessments is crucial for identifying patient capabilities and limitations. The nurse develops and contributes to a nursing action plan. Accurate transcription and notation of physician orders are required. Patient care plans should be initiated using patient care standards. Documentation of reassessments, laboratory results, and patient observations is expected. The nurse gives shift reports according to established guidelines. Educational knowledge will be imparted to enhance decision-making and understanding. Participation in patient care conferences is expected. Identifying staff, patient, and family needs will guide the development of education plans. Engagement in ongoing evaluations of teaching effectiveness is important. Providing discharge patient information is required. The nurse participates in educational programs and in-services. Certification courses must be completed within specified timeframes.
