Overview SUPERVISION RECEIVED : Physician and/or Registered Nurse GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES : Surgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses. Responsibilities Prepare and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation for surgical procedures. Prepare the operating room by setting up the sterile field, including surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Follow state and federal facility regulations when attending to patients. Perform pre-procedure preparations to the patient\'s skin and body. Perform safety checks prior to the start of procedures on appropriate equipment and supplies. Assemble sterile and non-sterile equipment and verify it is functioning properly. Assist with patient procedure prep as needed. Transport patients to the procedure room and assist with positioning on the procedure table. Drape the patient with surgical drapes per procedure requirements. Pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants. Retract, cut sutures, and perform other functions under the physician\'s supervision. Participate in the count of sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments based on the procedure type. Prepare specimens and assist with disposition of specimens. Assist with patient transfer after the procedure and clean/restock the procedure room. Pull supplies and instruments for upcoming procedures and assist with inventory management and physician preference cards. Assist with decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and quality testing related to sterilization and high-level disinfection. Perform other duties as assigned. Education, Experience, and Requirements A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program; or completed an appropriate training program for surgical technologists in the Armed Forces; or is completing duties related to employment by the federal government; or has equivalent training or experience. Prefer 1-2 years of clinical experience in an operating room setting. May accept 0-2 years of clinical experience in a related field. Must be certified in Basic Life Support. Must be certified to perform CPR with 0-2 years of clinical experience in a related field. Physical/Mental Demands Ability to be on your feet for long periods and to assist with disabled patients as needed. Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Ability to concentrate for periods of up to four hours. Ability to communicate verbally in person and on the telephone. Ability to use a computer keyboard and view a monitor. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. Understand growth and development across the lifespan and assess data relevant to age-specific needs to provide care per center policies and procedures. Demonstrate the nursing process and effective communication. Maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co-workers, and other health team members. Additional Physical/Environmental Details Surgical technologists work in clean, well-lit, cool environments. Must stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. May be exposed to communicable diseases, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials. Acceptable to work in a normal busy office environment with occasional evening and/or weekend work.
