Position Overview

Introductory Costume Design instructors will lead one or more sections of THEATRE 3511, "Introduction to Costume Design," a fundamental exploration of methods of design and production as applies to costumes and makeup for theatre. This course combines lecture, demonstration, hands-on practice, discussion, and feedback for students to acquire and demonstrate applied costume construction techniques and concepts.

THEATRE 3511, "Introduction to Costume Design" students study the elements and principles of visual design and the processes of the costume and makeup designer. There will be hands-on projects creating costume designs and designs for theatrical characters. Skills of drawing/painting and costume construction will be developed over the course of the semester. Other covered topics include textual analysis, style, and visual character development.

This course is offered in-person on Columbus campus with two 80-minute class meetings per week. Specific meeting times and formats vary by assignment and are dependent on demand and availability.

Performance Objectives
  • Communicate and collaborate with faculty supervisor(s) to carry out course activities and objectives as outlined in an approved syllabus.
  • Lead all course meetings and support students' achievement of the following course goals:
  • Students will learn to understand and appreciate the arts, crafts, and processes of costume design and production and their importance in theatrical productions.
  • Students will learn how to conceptualize costume designs for the stage that support the characters within a story or theme of the production.
  • Students will acquire basic costume construction skills, and will be able to articulate and demonstrate the costume design and production process.
  • Students will be able to analyze and interpret costume designs and how they relate to the story, the theme, and the context(s) of the production.
  • Students will be able to critically analyze a script for text, dialogue, and action that support the appearance and function of costume design for character(s) and theme(s) of the play.
  • Students will design costumes within different contexts (places, times, class, etc.), and effectively communicate designs textually, visually, and orally.
Education and Experience Requirements

Required: Advanced Degree (MFA, MA, or PhD) in Theatre or comparable field/graduate degree. Experience in costume design and undergraduate level instruction in costume design for theatre.
