Medical Assistant - University Health Services (UHS)- Community Health & Well-Being | Division of Student Affairs

Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for the position of medical assistant with University Health Services within the Community Health and Well-Being Unit of the Division of Student Affairs. This is a full-time position with a start date as soon as possible. This position is benefits eligible. The medical assistant is a vital member of a multidisciplinary team of highly skilled practitioners, health promotion and administrative professionals.

The medical assistant is responsible for providing quality care and related services to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students in a University Health Services setting. This person must share in the vision of providing quality clinical services to the Carnegie Mellon University Community. University Health Services performs over 30,000 patient contact visits annually and is a dynamic work environment that respects and supports the professional development of its staff.

The Medical Assistant provides clinical and laboratory support for University Health Services (UHS), with primary responsibility for phlebotomy and laboratory specimen processing, immunizations, and maintaining the supplies and clinical areas necessary to support daily patient care .

The Medical Assistant works collaboratively with physicians, Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs), registered nurses, and other members of the UHS team to ensure accurate and timely laboratory processing, safe administration of immunizations, and efficient daily clinic operations.

Additional responsibilities include rooming patients, assisting physicians, APCs and nurses with clinical procedures, supporting patient flow, and assisting with front desk operations when needed.

Core Responsibilities Include:
Laboratory and Phlebotomy

• Perform venipuncture and collect, process, label, and prepare specimens for daily Quest Diagnostics pickup.
• Ensure accurate patient identification, documentation, specimen integrity, and compliance with laboratory standards.
• Perform point-of-care testing and required quality control procedures.
• Participate in laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities and the QA Committee as assigned.
• Follow all applicable laboratory, OSHA, infection-control, and safety requirements.

Immunizations

• Administer routine and influenza immunizations via subcutaneous and intramuscular injection according to established protocols and scope of practice.
• Prepare patients and accurately document immunizations and related clinical information.
• Maintain vaccine supplies and follow required storage, handling, administration, and documentation standards.

Clinical and Laboratory Supplies

• Stock, clean, and maintain examination rooms daily to ensure supplies and equipment are readily available.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and operational laboratory.
• Monitor inventory, identify supply needs, and order laboratory and clinical supplies through approved vendors.
• Ensure supplies are properly stored, organized, and readily accessible, and communicate supply or equipment concerns as needed.

Additional Clinical Support Responsibilities
Patient Rooming and Clinical Support

• Room patients, obtain and document vital signs, weight, and other clinical information.
• Assist APCs and registered nurses with patient care, procedures, specimen collection, and discharge.
• Support efficient patient flow throughout the clinical visit.
• Front Desk and Patient Support
• Provide front desk support as needed, including phones, scheduling, check-in, and discharge.
• Assist with patient flow and administrative tasks during periods of increased demand.
• Assist with referrals to Pittsburgh-area community healthcare resources as directed by the clinical team.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 0-1 year of health care experience required
• A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered
• Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), preferably through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or equivalent nationally recognized medical assistant certification.
• Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification through the American Red Cross or equivalent nationally recognized organization.

Preferred experience and skills

• 3-5 years of healthcare experience preferred; experience in an ambulatory, primary care, college health, or similar healthcare setting preferred.
• Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy and specimen collection.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent organization and planning skills.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy, particularly with laboratory specimens, documentation, and inventory.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet time-sensitive laboratory processing and Quest Diagnostics pickup requirements.
• Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
• Demonstrated commitment to providing respectful, inclusive, and patient-centered care to a diverse student population.
