Registered Nurse (RN) II - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)-Part Time

Job Title Registered Nurse (RN) II – Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) – Part Time (260001B8) Overview The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) awarded the Children’s National Pediatric Intensive Care Unit a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence. The award marked an important milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and a healthy work environment. The PICU is a 46-bed unit, expanding to 60 beds in 2027. It serves as a regional referral center and is a Level I Trauma Center for comprehensive care to pediatric patients and their families. The PICU Patient Care Management Team coordinates interdisciplinary assessment and care, provided by pediatric intensivists and specialty nurses in conjunction with multiple specialty services. Patients are admitted from the ED, Trauma Services, Operating Room, and transfers from in-house units and other institutions via the Pediatric Transport team. Trauma patients comprise about 10%–15% of cases; the PICU is also a Pediatric Burn Center and receives referrals for complex surgical and medical conditions. Medical patients include children with respiratory failure, meningitis or seizures, sepsis, multi‑system organ failure, chronic illness, and cancer complications. Services are provided daily, 24 hours per day. Qualifications Minimum Education BSN – Graduated from an approved nursing school (Preferred). Minimum Work Experience 1 year RN experience (Required). Required Skills/Knowledge The licensed Registered Nurse will successfully complete the hospital and nursing orientation at Children’s National and keep knowledge current with changes in specialty area. Required Licenses and Certifications Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia depending on location of practice (Required). Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Functional Accountabilities Transformational Leadership Contribute to Magnet redesignation by updating professional profile and initiating council involvement, committees, task forces, and community outreach. Demonstrate critical thinking by problem solving during patient care. Communicate to reflect plan of care development and advocate for patient needs. Independently initiate escalation of issues utilizing chain of command. Demonstrate proper use of hand‑off processes. Demonstrate collegial and respectful relationships with ancillary staff. Structural Empowerment Maintain regulatory requirements such as license and BLS. Plan attendance at mandatory education and professional activities. Demonstrate professional review of peers through participation in evaluations. Seek opportunities to enhance departmental goals while adhering to national safety and service excellence standards. Collaborate with healthcare team and role‑model professional behavior and teamwork. Utilize resources and know when to escalate to next level. Exemplary Professional Practice Utilize assessment data to complete data base and plan of care within timeframes.
