This phlebotomist position is based at an outpatient patient service center in Astoria, Queens and requires an experienced professional who is comfortable working independently at a single-person site. The role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection using straight needles, ensuring accurate processing, labeling, and data entry in a fast-paced environment. Strong Spanish language skills are essential to effectively communicate with patients, explain procedures clearly and courteously, and provide an excellent patient experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws (venipuncture) using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and care.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
• Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients in both English and Spanish.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels are 100% correct.
• Label specimens accurately, centrifuge, split, and freeze samples as required by specific test orders.
• Package specimens properly for transport and follow all protocols to maintain specimen integrity, including correct temperature and container requirements.
• Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and follow all safety and infection control procedures.
• Update patient information and perform data entry accurately in laboratory and office systems.
• Work independently at a one-person site, managing the full specimen collection and processing workflow.
• Provide professional, courteous communication to patients and colleagues, demonstrating reliability and punctuality.
• Support outpatient phlebotomy operations in a fast-paced lab or hospital-style setting as needed.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 2 years of recent phlebotomy experience, including extensive straight needle venipuncture.
• Minimum 1 year of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Strong proficiency with straight needle blood draws and venipuncture techniques.
• Bilingual Spanish-speaking skills with the ability to communicate clearly with patients.
• Ability to perform specimen collection for blood, urine, fecal, and other sample types following established procedures.
• Accuracy in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens according to test requirements.
• Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry and basic administrative tasks.
• Reliable and punctual work habits with strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage responsibilities at a single-person site.
• Comfort working in an outpatient phlebotomy environment with consistent patient interaction.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in outpatient phlebotomy or patient service center settings.
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic requisition processes.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain specimen integrity through proper storage, temperature control, and transport procedures.
• Strong organizational skills to handle multiple specimens and tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to provide clear, empathetic explanations of procedures to patients who may be anxious or unfamiliar with blood draws.

Work Environment

This role is based in an outpatient patient service center in Astoria, Queens. The phlebotomist works at a one-person site and must be comfortable operating independently while handling the full range of specimen collection and processing tasks. The environment is fast-paced and patient-facing, with regular interaction with a diverse community, including many Spanish-speaking patients. Standard laboratory equipment is used daily, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen collection containers, and computer systems for data entry and requisition management. The schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at a nearby location on 90th Street. Professional attire appropriate for a clinical outpatient setting is expected, and adherence to all safety, infection control, and specimen handling protocols is required.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Astoria, NY.

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
