Tax Manager - Public Accounting

An established, growing and highly respected CPA firm in the Riverhead, Long Island area with a terrific, friendly culture, multiple partners and about 25 employees is hiring a Tax Manager (newly added position due to firm growth) to work on a hybrid basis (3 days on site, 2 days remote, outside of tax season). Base salary to approximately $150k plus bonus, plus fully paid employee health insurance premiums (plus a $3k firm-funded HRA for health plan deductibles), plus commissions on new business brought into the firm. Partner track opportunity as the firm promoted an employee to Partner in 2025. Main responsibilities include preparing tax returns and providing tax strategy for the firm’s diverse clients, providing business advisory services, overseeing the efforts of firm staff performing bookkeeping services for such clients and, on occasion, pitching in to perform bookkeeping services to supplement the efforts of firm’s staff. CPA OR EA certification and at least 5 years of relevant experience is required. Experience supervising and mentoring staff is highly preferred. NOTE: Candidates MUST LIVE IN SUFFOLK COUNTY within 30 miles of Riverhead, NY to be considered for this role. Key Responsibilities Tax Compliance & Planning: Prepare and review complex federal, state, and local income tax returns (Individuals, Partnerships, S-Corps, and C-Corps). Client Accounting & Advisory: Oversee firm staff who perform month-end and year-end close activities, process journal entries, reconcile bank statements, review financial statements, and possibly prepare a budget for small business clients. As necessary, the Tax Manager will pitch in to perform bookkeeping services to supplement the work of the firm’s staff. Strategic Tax Consulting: Provide proactive tax research and planning strategies for optimized tax efficiency and minimized liabilities for business owners. Client Relations: Primary point of contact for small business clients, answering tax queries, guiding financial decisions, and advising on recent tax law changes. Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and review the work of staff accountants and bookkeepers, ensuring accuracy, data integrity, and compliance with GAAP. Required Qualifications Experience: 5+ years of progressive and relevant tax experience in public accounting at small to mid-sized CPA firm(s) with smaller clients. Certifications: Active CPA or EA Computer Skills: Advanced proficiency in cloud-based accounting and tax software (e.g., QuickBooks Online). Business Acumen: Strong understanding of small business operations, payroll processing, and financial forecasting. Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-financial clients.
