Prevention Specialist

Position Summary The Advocacy & Prevention Specialist is responsible for assisting survivors in dealing with the immediate and long‑term impact of victimization, as well as working in the community to offer programming intended to prevent sexual violence. The Specialist will also be the designated campus advocate working with student survivors going through the Title IX processes, acting as advisor of choice when requested. The Specialist will provide high‑quality prevention education to youth, adults, and professionals to reduce sexual assault and other forms of violence through bystander intervention and awareness of resources for survivors and their loved ones. The position requires comfort with public speaking and education in school, campus, community and professional settings. The Specialist covers the Survivor Support Services (SSS) 24/7 hotline, including mandatory after‑hours on‑call time. Flexibility in work schedule is essential; some evenings, weekends and regional travel (approx. 50% of the time) are required. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Direct Services (50%) Provide crisis intervention, emotional support and advocacy services to sexual assault survivors and victims of crime as needed. Provide medical, criminal justice, and personal accompaniment services when requested. Offer advocacy services through Title IX processes. Staff the 24‑hour hotline and assist with support groups. Help develop initial case plans and ongoing advocacy strategies. Assist in developing and coordinating supportive activities for individuals and groups. Complete crime victim compensation applications. Education & Outreach (25%) Complete facilitator trainings for SSS curricula. Facilitate internal and external curricula to youth, adults and professionals with fidelity. Prepare materials, replenish outreach supplies, handouts and evaluation surveys. Collect demographic and required data from workshop participants. Engage in community outreach programs with members, organizations, parents and professionals. Promote SSS at health fairs, schools and community programs. Organize education and outreach events on campus with partners. Stay current on research and pursue ongoing training in bystander intervention, trauma‑informed care and prevention of sexual assault, dating and intimate partner violence, child sexual abuse, sex trafficking and digital abuse. Community Engagement (10%) Develop cooperative relationships with other agencies, organizations and campus offices. Inform professional groups in the community about available services for crime victims. Plan and prepare exhibits for community events and promote awareness initiatives, including Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Support the administration of program social media platforms. Administrative (10%) Maintain DOH Rape Crisis Counselor/Advocate certification through mandatory continuing education. Keep service data, create reports for funded projects, and meet grant specifications. Support manager in revising and updating workshops. Conduct regular curriculum review for inclusivity, accessibility and accuracy. Maintain case files. Assist in preparing monthly and quarterly statistical reports. Provide office coverage as assigned. Attend staff meetings and assist in program evaluation. Participate in program planning. Assist county coordinator in developing community‑agency relations. Perform other duties as assigned in a team‑based environment. Volunteer Coordination (5%) Recruit, train and support volunteer staff. Coordinate volunteer coverage of the 24‑hour crisis hotline, including evenings and weekends. Provide assistance and consultation to volunteers as needed. Participate in volunteer evaluation. Education and Experience Education, lived experience, and/or professional experience related to advocacy, prevention, and community engagement. Ability to work cooperatively with different personalities. Experience working in community, external agencies and organizations. Flexible schedule; evening and/or weekend work required. Maintain confidentiality of client information. Understand and accept PPGNY’s Personnel Policies. Follow safety and security guidelines. Valid NYS Driver’s License; use of personal vehicle required. Ability to travel. Bilingual in Spanish/English. Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques, case management responsibilities, human behavior and needs during crime and crisis, behavioral health, social services, community resources, the criminal justice system, NYS Criminal Code, and rights of victims, police department operations, policies, and procedures. Experience with on‑call work and operating a hotline. Physical requirements: prolonged sitting, use of computer, periodic standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 25 pounds, stair navigation, visual and auditory acuity, standard office equipment use. Professional office environment with potential exposure to communicable diseases; travel required to various indoor and outdoor environments; flexible schedule; peak activity may exceed 7.5 hours per day or 37.5 hours per week.
