Assistant United States Attorney (Appellate Division) Term Appt.

Assistant U.S. Attorney (Appellate Division) Oversight: One position located in Beaumont, Plano, Sherman, or Tyler, TX. Term position not to exceed September 30, 2029, subject to availability of funds. Appointments may be extended or made permanent without further advertising. Responsibilities Research and prepare appellate briefs on complex and novel issues involving constitutional, statutory construction, evidentiary, procedural, and sentencing matters. Write post-conviction responses and present oral arguments in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Handle cases arising from immigration, national security, and public safety offenses and other related matters as assigned. Provide real-time trial assistance to Assistant U.S. Attorneys. Progress to more complex assignments as training and experience grow. Required Qualifications J.D. degree and active membership in good standing of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction. United States citizenship. Must be a United States Citizen or National. Residency: must reside in the district of appointment or within 25 miles thereof. Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax and drug testing; continued employment conditioned upon favorable background investigation. Preferred Qualifications Quick analytical ability with accurate and precise articulation of critical issues. Superior oral and written communication skills with strong research and interpersonal skills. Excellent courtroom skills and ability to work in a supportive, professional manner with attorneys, support staff, and client agencies. Good judgment and sound decision‑making. Salary and Benefits Salary is based on years of professional attorney experience. Range: $65,563 to $171,487 per year. Locality pay follows: Beaumont and Tyler, TX: $76,748 to $173,485 (including 17.06% locality pay). Plano and Sherman, TX: $83,435 to $188,602 (including 27.26% locality pay). Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Security and Background Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication: fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment conditioned upon a favorable background investigation. Other Information Travel may be required. Relocation expenses are not authorized. The position is a term appointment funded through September 30, 2029. All initial attorney appointments are made on a 14‑month temporary basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
