Position Overview The E&S Casualty Underwriting Specialist transacts business with appointed wholesale trading partners and will be responsible for identifying, soliciting, underwriting, and selling new and renewal Specialty accounts that drive profitable growth and align with Industry Segments, appetite and mix goals. Responsibilities include: Apply underwriting concepts including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification, coverage implications, and loss analysis. Use underwriting tools and strategies to ensure guidelines are followed. Understand pricing components and rating methodology, and correlate pricing to exposures. Formulate key questions to assess full scope of operations and needed controls when presented with minimal information. Document files according to best practice guidelines and explain account decisions. Provide clear rating instructions for quotes before generating proposals for presentation to agents. Portfolio Management & Financial Acumen Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, and new business goals. Analyze financial reporting information and insurance performance measures to manage risk. Understand market factors affecting pricing and how they correlate to individual and regional books. Prepare or analyze information on underwriting decisions, rates, company appetite, status, and declines to drive results. Leverage coordination with other Hanover departments to balance portfolio growth. Sales Management Identify, solicit, pipeline, negotiate, and close accounts aligned with business strategy. Profile assigned agency plant and market capabilities to agents. Stay current on state/territory regulations and trends. Use market and competitor information to enhance relationships and decisions. Build trust, facilitate negotiation, and secure commitment to improve yield and retention. Identify cross‑sell opportunities within other lines of business and customer segments. Partner with other units to deliver comprehensive insurance solutions. Communicate Hanover’s position and products clearly at the point of sale. Maintain rigorous sales practices and utilize sales tools. Make presentations to agents and customers, collaborating with department and Specialty partners. What You Need to Apply Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience. 3‑7+ years Specialty or standard commercial lines experience. 3‑4+ years experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business. Adaptability, problem‑solving, openness to new ideas. Communication skills for interacting with internal and external partners. Judgment and decision‑making ability within authorized scope. Agile and adaptive approach to multiple concurrent projects. Teamwork, collaboration, and respect for diversity. Prioritization and desk management: monitoring progress and mitigating challenges.
