Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (Psych NP) is a highly skilled provider delivering comprehensive mental health assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and medication management services for patients across diverse populations.

The Psych NP collaborates with psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to deliver evidence-based psychiatric care in outpatient, inpatient, or community-based settings, and demonstrates a commitment to patient-centered care, crisis intervention, and improving mental health outcomes through integrated behavioral healthcare services.

Clinical Assessment & Patient Care

· Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, mental health assessments, and diagnostic interviews.

· Diagnose and treat mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, ADHD, substance use disorders, and other psychiatric conditions.

· Develop individualized treatment plans based on patient needs and evidence-based practices.

· Prescribe, monitor, and manage psychotropic medications and treatment regimens.

· Provide ongoing medication management and therapeutic support.

· Monitor patient progress, treatment response, side effects, and medication compliance.

Crisis Intervention & Behavioral Health Support

· Assess and manage psychiatric crises, suicidal ideation, and behavioral emergencies.

· Coordinate appropriate interventions, referrals, and hospitalization when necessary.

· Provide supportive counseling, psychoeducation, and behavioral health interventions.

· Promote patient safety and continuity of care.

Collaboration & Care Coordination

· Collaborate with psychiatrists, therapists, primary care providers, case managers, and community resources.

· Participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning and case conferences.

· Coordinate referrals for specialized mental health or substance abuse services.

· Support integrated healthcare initiatives and collaborative care models.

Documentation & Compliance

· Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records in compliance with HIPAA and organizational standards.

· Ensure compliance with federal, state, and accrediting agency regulations.

· Participate in quality improvement and performance management activities.

Education & Advocacy

· Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment options, and coping strategies.

· Advocate for patients’ mental health needs and access to services.

· Promote mental health awareness and stigma reduction initiatives.

Required Qualification and Competencies

· Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited program.

· Completion of an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) prog

· Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure.

· Board Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).

· DEA registration and controlled substance prescriptive authority as required by state law.

· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; ACLS preferred depending on setting.

· 2–3 years of psychiatric or behavioral health clinical experience; open to recent graduates.

· Experience with medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and substance use disorders preferred.

· Experience in outpatient, inpatient, crisis, or community mental health settings preferred.

· Experience working with underserved or high-risk populations preferred.

· Strong psychiatric diagnostic and clinical assessment skills.

· Knowledge of psychopharmacology and evidence-based mental health treatments.

· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and counseling abilities.

· Ability to manage psychiatric crises and high-risk situations.

· Strong critical thinking, organizational, and documentation skills.

· Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

· Commitment to compassionate, culturally competent, and trauma-informed care.

· Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems.

· Strong written and verbal communication.

· Time management and deadline adherence.

Preferred Qualification and Competencies

· Experience in community health, public health, or correctional healthcare settings.

· Experience with telepsychiatry and virtual behavioral healthcare.

· Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.

· Familiarity with integrated behavioral health and collaborative care models.

· Experience working with pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, or underserved populations.
