We are seeking a Full-stack Engineer 5 to provide technical leadership across foundational enterprise platforms and regulatory tech initiatives. In this role, you will lead the architecture, modernization, and evolution of large-scale, distributed customer data and relationship capabilities, while guiding teams of developers in building resilient cloud-native systems. You will work across current and future-state architectures within Enterprise Platforms Technology (EPTech)—designing scalable APIs, data contracts, and self-service platform services that empower millions of Americans to achieve financial empowerment.

What You'll Do:

• Technical & Platform Leadership: Lead the architecture, end-to-end design, and implementation of highly available, resilient, and scalable cloud-native microservices, APIs, data contracts, and shared platform services.

• Modernization & Ecosystem Evolution: Provide technical vision for modernizing foundational customer data platforms while ensuring interoperability, continuity, and consistent interaction patterns across evolving database technologies and distributed systems.

• Strategy & Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner with digital product managers, database architects, and engineering leaders to define long-term technology directions, system architectures, and self-service capabilities that streamline regulatory compliance and developer onboarding.

• Operational Excellence & Automation: Drive automation, observability, and robust engineering practices to minimize manual processes, improve developer productivity, and ensure superior system reliability and performance.

• Modern Tech Stack Utilization: Leverage cutting-edge tools including Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, Open Source RDBMS, NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS services.

• Mentorship & Community: Influence technical strategy across multiple engineering teams, mentor and grow technical talent, experiment with emerging tech trends, and actively contribute to internal and external engineering communities.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science or a related quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Engineering)
• At least 6 years of experience in software engineering (Internship experience does not apply)
• At least 3 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 9+ years of software development experience coding in two or more of the following languages: Java, Python, Go, Scala, Node.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, Rust, or C#.
• 5+ years of experience contributing to open-source frameworks.
• 5+ years of experience with modern front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• 5+ years of experience designing and building synchronous/asynchronous APIs and designing robust API platform architectures.
• 5+ years of experience leveraging GraphDB platforms alongside 4+ years of hands-on experience with traditional database and database management systems (DBMS).
• 4+ years of experience designing, architecting, and implementing distributed, cloud-native platforms at scale.
• 4+ years of experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• 4+ years of experience with serverless frameworks, container-based cloud architectures, and large-scale data-processing technologies.
• 4+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automated testing frameworks, and Git-based version control systems (e.g., Git, GitHub, Bitbucket).
• 4+ years of experience troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments, including 2+ years leveraging observability to identify and optimize performance bottlenecks in distributed systems, and 1+ year implementing observability and reliability practices at scale.
• 3+ years of experience mentoring senior engineers and driving professional development within engineering teams.
• 1+ year of experience leading architectural design reviews, influencing enterprise-wide technical standards, and establishing/enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.
• Direct experience leveraging modern AI-based coding tools, IDE copilots, and interactive AI tooling to accelerate productivity beyond basic code completion.
• Proven experience leading cross-functional engineering initiatives and influencing technology strategy at the portfolio or business unit level.

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $229,900 - $262,400 for Full-stack Engineer 5Plano, TX: $209,000 - $238,500 for Full-stack Engineer 5Richmond, VA: $209,000 - $238,500 for Full-stack Engineer 5

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
