Job Description
Job Title: Roadway Construction Materials Testing Technician (Level I/II)
Job Description
This role focuses on construction quality assurance field testing for roadway and related infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on concrete, soil, masonry, asphalt, and geosynthetics. The technician performs on-site testing, inspections, and observations to verify compliance with project specifications and applicable codes. The position offers strong career growth, extensive training, and support for professional certifications, including opportunities to work on projects in the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands. The ideal candidate is dependable, flexible with work hours, and eager to learn and advance within construction materials testing.
Responsibilities
- Perform construction quality assurance field testing of soil, concrete, masonry, asphalt, and geosynthetics on roadway and related projects.
- Conduct on-site inspections and project-specific observations to ensure work meets plans, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Monitor contractor activities, including earthwork, backfill, pipe installation, soils work, and concrete placement.
- Ride job sites, check in with contractors, and verify project plans on site to confirm daily tasks and testing requirements.
- Use specific methods to observe site activities, take samples, and perform tests such as soil compaction, soil density testing, and concrete testing.
- Operate field and laboratory equipment, including nuclear density gauges and related testing tools, in accordance with safety and technical standards.
- Prepare and maintain accurate daily field reports, test results, and documentation for submission to engineers and project stakeholders.
- Work from drawings, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and detailed verbal and written instructions provided by engineers and experienced staff.
- Assist engineers and other professionals by performing a variety of testing, site assessments, and data collection tasks.
- Support proof rolls and “cooking dirt” procedures by preparing soil samples, using drive rings, and determining soil density and moisture content.
- Adapt to varying schedules, including early morning, daytime, evening, and overnight concrete pours, based on project needs and weather conditions.
- Work independently or as part of a crew, depending on job requirements, while maintaining strong communication with clients and team members.
- Understand job specifications and plans and ensure that testing and sampling are performed at the correct locations and frequencies dictated by codes.
- Participate in training, cross-training, and certification preparation activities to expand technical capabilities and advance within the organization.
- Maintain dependability and flexibility in responding to schedule changes, including working additional hours or weekends when needed to make up for weather-related delays.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license.
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (ACI Level 1 Field Testing) certification (must).
- At least 2+ years of experience as a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Roadway Testing Technician with RTT GDOT certification.
- Strong hands-on concrete testing experience, including sampling, slump, air content, cylinders, and related field tests.
- Experience with soil testing, including soil compaction and soil density testing, is highly preferred.
- Ability to read and work from drawings, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and detailed instructions.
- Capability to operate testing equipment and accurately record and report test data.
- Comfort working outdoors on construction sites for extended periods, often in varying weather conditions.
- Willingness and ability to travel and stay out of town for extended periods as project needs require.
- High level of dependability and flexibility with work hours, including nights, early mornings, weekends, and varying shifts.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with contractors, clients, and experienced staff and to understand project specifications.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, adjusting to changing job demands day to day.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- NICET certification in construction materials testing or a related discipline (nice to have).
- RTT (Roadway Testing Technician) certification beyond the minimum requirements (nice to have).
- GSWCC certification (Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission) (nice to have).
- ICC certifications related to construction inspection or materials testing (nice to have).
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (nice to have).
- Nuclear Gauge Certification for use of nuclear density gauges (nice to have).
- Experience working in construction materials laboratories and with nuclear density gauges.
- Experience or interest in civil construction, roadway projects, and geosynthetics testing.
- Motivation to pursue additional certifications and professional development with employer support.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing project schedules, locations, and testing priorities.
- Interest in long-term career growth within construction materials testing, including progression beyond concrete into broader CMT disciplines.
Work Environment
This position is primarily field-based and typically outdoors on active construction sites in the Atlanta area, with all projects located in and around Atlanta. Technicians usually work 5–6 days per week, with typical days ranging from 8 to 12 hours and weekly hours often falling between 45 and 55, depending on project demands and weather. Schedules are highly variable: shifts may be early morning, daytime, evening, or overnight, and it is common to support night-time concrete pours, especially during Georgia summers. Technicians may work from approximately 3:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., midnight to 10:00 a.m., or standard daytime hours such as 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Flexibility and dependability are critical, as there is “no typical night” and work can shift between nights and days over the course of a week. The role includes monitoring earthwork, backfill, pipe installation, soils work, and random concrete pours, as well as performing proof rolls and soil density testing. The employer provides a company truck and fuel card, and technicians may be allowed to drive company trucks to and from home and job sites; this is a privilege that must be earned and maintained. Some positions involve travel and extended stays out of town, including opportunities to support projects in the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands, where housing and travel logistics are facilitated. The environment combines the close-knit feel of a smaller firm with strong availability and support from experienced technicians, who help cross-train and mentor newer staff. The organization invests in employees by paying for the first round of certifications, providing study support, and offering clear upward mobility so that hard-working technicians can progress beyond entry-level tasks into more advanced responsibilities.
