ZAP Engineering
ZAP Engineering & Construction Services, Inc.GENERAL SUPERINTENDENTField Leadership Role | Construction Operations | Mechanical / Oil & Gas | ExemptWHO WE AREZAP is a specialized engineering and construction firm delivering complex industrial projects across the oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, heavy industrial, mining, and manufacturing sectors. We are a team of technically driven, safety-focused professionals who take pride in building things right — on time, on budget, and without shortcuts. We are growing, and we are looking for high-caliber field leaders who want to own their work, build their career, and make a real impact on project outcomes. If you hold yourself to a high standard, thrive in a fast-moving environment, and bring both technical command of mechanical construction and the leadership to drive a craft workforce — we want to talk to you.THE OPPORTUNITYWe are hiring a General Superintendent to lead the field execution of mechanical construction on our oil & gas projects. This is the senior field leadership role on the project — you own safety, productivity, quality, and schedule at the work face, and you direct the craft superintendents, foremen, field administration, and QA/QC team who get the work installed.Your scope spans the full mechanical package: underground piping installation, equipment setting with cranes, equipment dress-out, structural steel pipe rack and platform erection, above-ground piping installation in the rack with welding and fit-up crews, pressure testing, and reinstatement/restoration of piping systems. You will work shoulder-to-shoulder with the on-site Construction Manager, Project Manager, engineering, and client representatives every day.POSITION DETAILSReports To:Construction Manager and Construction Project Manager (on-site / day-to-day); Execution Manager (organizational)Direct Reports:Craft Superintendents, Area Foremen, Field Administration, QA/QC Team, and all mechanical craft labor (pipefitters, welders, welder helpers, equipment operators, crane operators, laborers, material coordinators, and painters)FLSA Status:ExemptLocation:Project Sites / Field-BasedTravel:As required by project needsDepartment:Construction OperationsWHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORRequired10+ years of mechanical/industrial construction experience, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and education, with progressive field leadership responsibility.Proven experience running mechanical scope on oil & gas or heavy industrial projects: underground and above-ground piping, equipment setting, structural steel, welding/fit-up, and pressure testing.Demonstrated ability to manage and develop craft superintendents, foremen, field administration, and QA/QC personnel.Strong working knowledge of crane and rigging operations and critical lift planning.Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, isometrics, P&IDs, and specifications.Working knowledge of RFI processes, field verification, punch lists, and turnover documentation.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and field/project management software used to execute daily tasks.Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to independently make decisions and direct work.High school diploma or GED requiredPreferredAssociate's, Bachelor's, trade, or technical school education.HSE certification (e.g., OSHA 30-Hour Construction) and current crane/rigging or lift-director qualifications.Experience with welding QA/QC programs, ASME/B31.3 piping, and hydrostatic/pneumatic test procedures.Experience coordinating directly with clients and engineering on a fast-paced, multi-craft site.WHAT YOU WILL DOSafety & Site LeadershipSet the safety standard for the field — prioritize safety in every plan and hold all crews and subcontractors accountable to ZAP and client HSE requirements.Establish daily job site objectives and ensure crews are fully equipped, staffed, and sequenced to meet project deadlines.Proactively identify and correct unsafe conditions; lead and reinforce a zero-incident safety culture in pre-task planning, JSAs, and field interactions.Coordinate crane lifts and critical operations, confirming lift plans, rigging, and exclusion zones are reviewed and approved before execution.Field Execution – Mechanical ScopeDirect installation of underground piping — trenching coordination, bedding, fit-up, welding, tie-ins, and backfill in the correct sequence.Manage setting of equipment with cranes and subsequent equipment dress-out, including alignment, grouting, and accessory installation.Oversee erection of structural steel pipe racks and platforms, confirming proper sequence, bolt-up, and grade/elevation control.Drive above-ground piping installation in the rack with welding and fit-up crews, maintaining productivity, weld quality, and material control.Manage pressure testing of piping systems — test package readiness, safe execution, documentation, and sign-off — followed by reinstatement and restoration of piping to operational condition.Workforce & Resource ManagementOversee and direct all mechanical craft labor on site — including area foremen, pipefitters, welders, welder helpers, equipment operators, crane operators, laborers, material coordinators, and painters — setting daily expectations for safety, productivity, and quality at the work face.Supervise and develop the craft superintendents, foremen, field administration, and QA/QC team; set clear expectations and hold the field organization accountable.Plan and balance manpower, equipment, tools, and consumables across crews to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.Forecast field needs and coordinate material availability with the Material Coordinator and procurement to keep crews working.Manage subcontractors and specialty crews on site, confirming scope, performance, and adherence to schedule and quality standards.Schedule, Progress & ReportingExecute to the project schedule; build and drive short-interval (look-ahead) plans and recovery plans when work falls behind.Conduct daily coordination with the on-site Construction Manager and Project Manager to report progress, plan, and align resources.Maintain accurate field reporting — daily reports, progress tracking, manpower, and quantities installed — in spreadsheets and project systems.Verify completion of punch lists and confirm project schedules and turnover documentation are updated accordingly.Quality, Field Verification & CoordinationPartner with the QA/QC team to ensure work is installed to drawings, specifications, codes, and client standards the first time.Manage field verification, Requests for Information (RFIs), and resolution of design discrepancies and constructability issues with engineering.Provide timely updates and clear communication to clients, contractors, and ZAP leadership throughout the project.Lead site walkdowns and inspections, following up on progress and open items to keep milestones on track.Assist with other duties as assigned.SUPERVISION & INDEPENDENCE OF ACTIONSupervisory ExpectationsThis position has direct supervisory authority over the entire field organization, including the craft superintendents, area foremen, field administration, QA/QC team, and all mechanical craft labor (pipefitters, welders, welder helpers, equipment operators, crane operators, laborers, material coordinators, and painters), as well as oversight of subcontractors and specialty crews on site.Independence of ActionResults are defined; the incumbent sets own goals and determines how to accomplish results with few or no guidelines to follow. Although precedents may exist, the on-site Construction Manager and Execution Manager provide broad guidance and overall direction.PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT("Occasionally" means up to 1/3 of working time, "regularly" means between 1/3 and 2/3, and "frequently" means 2/3 or more of working time.)The work environment is a typical construction environment. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR SUCCESSA-players in this role demonstrate consistent mastery across the following competencies. These are not aspirational — they are the standard we hire and retain to.01Safety LeadershipOwns a personal, visible commitment to safety excellence — not just compliance. Drives a zero-incident culture across all crews, subcontractors, and high-risk operations such as crane lifts and pressure testing.02Mechanical Construction CommandDeep, hands-on knowledge of underground and above-ground piping, equipment setting and dress-out, structural steel, welding, fit-up, and pressure testing — knows how the work goes in and what good looks like.03Crew & Productivity ManagementPlans, sequences, and drives a craft workforce to hit daily and weekly targets. Balances manpower, equipment, and materials to maximize wrench time and minimize downtime.04Schedule ExecutionReads and drives the schedule, builds short-interval look-aheads, identifies slippage early, and executes recovery plans without sacrificing safety or quality.05Quality & Code AwarenessEnsures work is installed to drawings, specs, and codes the first time. Partners with QA/QC and reads constructability risks before they become costly rework.06Communication & Stakeholder InfluenceCommunicates clearly and professionally across all levels — craft crews, the Construction Manager, PMs, engineering, and clients. Runs effective coordination and keeps everyone aligned.07Leadership & AccountabilityLeads from the front, takes charge, and holds the field organization accountable. Develops superintendents and foremen, and follows through reliably on commitments.08Decision-Making & JudgmentMakes timely, sound field decisions with few guidelines; sets own goals and determines how to accomplish results, escalating early when blockers arise.09Adaptability Under PressureThrives in a fast-moving field environment; manages competing demands, weather, and changing conditions without dropping the ball.10Planning & OrganizationPrioritizes and plans work activities, organizes crews and resources, maintains accurate field records, and develops realistic action plans.EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYERZAP Construction LLC is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
